Appearance
Fredrick is a sturdy man of half-elven heritage in his mid-30s. He possesses the slightly pointed ears of his ancestors, though they are partially hidden by a thick, bushy brown beard and messy hair. He wears well-maintained but battle-scarred half-plate armor over clothes of deep black and striking red. A large heater shield rests on his arm or back, and a simple ragdoll is tied prominently to his belt with sturdy leather cord. He is rarely seen without a wooden pipe clenched between his teeth.
Mannerisms
He has a tendency to blow smoke rings while thinking and often taps his shield twice with his knuckles before drawing his sword.
Personality
Fredrick is a man of few words and settled habits. He views the world through a lens of pragmatic survival, having seen the worst of war and the fragility of peace. He is not unkind, but he is guarded, preferring the company of his tobacco to idle chatter. He values competence and honesty above all else, and he remains calm even when the fires of battle rise high around him.
Ideals
Neutrality. I have seen the damage that fanatical belief in any side can cause. It is better to remain centered and protect what is right in front of you.
Bonds
The ragdoll on my belt is the last thing I have of my former life. I would sooner die than lose it.
Flaws
I am slow to trust others and often assume that everyone has a hidden agenda, which makes me seem cold or dismissive to potential allies.
Quirks
Background
Fredrick spent most of his adult life serving in a professional infantry unit within the borderlands. While his elven blood granted him a longer perspective than some of his comrades, it did not shield him from the tragedy of the Three-Year Siege. During the final collapse of his home village, he was unable to save his family, recovering nothing from the ashes but his daughter's ragdoll. He kept the doll as a reminder that some things are worth fighting for, even if they are already lost. After the war ended, Fredrick found he no longer knew how to be anything other than a soldier. He turned to the life of a mercenary, wandering the roads in search of work that pays enough to keep his pipe lit and his armor repaired. He does not fight for glory or a cause, but for the hope that one day he might find a place quiet enough to finally set the ragdoll down. He carries his heater shield and longsword with the weary grace of a professional, treating every skirmish like a day at the office.
