Appearance
Vethala Dar-Boud is an enormous goliath with slate-gray skin, a completely bald head, and an immense black beard braided with iron rings bearing tiny raven charms. His stern face rarely softens, and his pale eyes constantly track doors, windows, rafters, and shadows before settling on a speaker. He wears imposing black raven-knight armor over reinforced leather, marked with silver feathers and the sigil of the Raven Queen. His hands are broad and heavily callused from years of sword drills, ritual carving, and maintaining ward-stones. He carries himself like a shrine made mobile, silent, deliberate, and impossible to overlook.
Mannerisms
Before answering, Vethala looks toward the nearest exit and then toward the darkest corner of the room. He rubs the iron rings in his beard while thinking, speaks in measured sentences, and lowers his voice when discussing the dead. When someone makes a promise, he extends one open hand and waits for them to place their hand against it.
Personality
Vethala is stern, patient, and intensely observant. He rarely raises his voice because he expects obedience to come from the weight of his words rather than volume. He is protective of travelers, mourners, and anyone caught between worlds. Around Storn-Kei, however, the rigid champion becomes quietly affectionate, showing love through repaired armor, prepared tea, and standing watch while she sleeps.
Ideals
Duty. The dead deserve silence, the living deserve protection, and every realm has borders that must be defended. No personal desire, even his own happiness, outranks the order entrusted to him.
Bonds
Storn-Kei, his wife and fellow guardian, is the one person whose judgment he trusts without reservation. He is bound to the Raven Queen, the Shadar-kai who first welcomed him, and the ward-stones that keep the Black Woods from bleeding into the Material Plane. He still carries the coalition token of the Inderfrey Coalition, though he now treats it as a reminder of a failure that must never be repeated.
Flaws
He believes hesitation is a moral failure and can become cold or authoritarian when others question his orders. He has little patience for those who treat death casually, and he sometimes mistakes emotional distance for spiritual discipline. His loyalty to the Raven Queen can make him accept terrible sacrifices if he believes they preserve the boundary between worlds.
Quirks
Background
Vethala Dar-Boud was born among a highland goliath clan that measured worth by endurance, but his life changed when Shadar-kai envoys came seeking aid against the Black Woods. They taught him that death was not merely an ending, but a boundary that must be respected and defended. Vethala became an acolyte of the Raven Queen, learning funerary rites, the names of the dead, and the disciplined silence required to hear disturbances in the Shadowfell. His faith gave shape to his immense strength, while his pact gave it purpose. In a moonless chapel built around a black standing stone, he swore himself to the Raven Queen and accepted the Hexblade power that answered from beyond the veil.
“They taught him that death was not merely an ending, but a boundary that must be respected and defended.”
