Appearance
Katie is a lean human woman with a compact, athletic build and restless hands that are always testing pockets, latches, or the edges of nearby objects. She favors her left side when standing still, as though keeping her right hand free for a tool or spell. Within a minute of meeting her, most people notice that her attention rarely settles on faces. Her eyes map exits, reflective surfaces, windows, hands, and empty spaces where something might be concealed. She dresses in dark, practical layers beneath a weather-stained gray coat, with copper-threaded gloves and a narrow satchel full of lockpicks, coded notes, and scraps of impossible diagrams.
Mannerisms
Katie pauses before answering questions, glancing toward a nearby reflective surface as if checking whether the conversation is being observed from another angle. She taps two fingers against her wrist when calculating probabilities and occasionally repeats the final word of a sentence in a different tone, testing how it sounds when reality is slightly misremembered.
Personality
Alert, irreverent, and intensely observant, Katie is most comfortable when she has several escape plans and at least one secret nobody else knows. She dislikes grand speeches and trusts practical competence over authority. Beneath her dry humor is a growing fear that the intelligence behind the Dreaming Archive is teaching her to see the world correctly, rather than teaching her to manipulate it.
Ideals
Information should belong to whoever is clever enough to uncover it. No authority, mortal or otherwise, deserves unquestioned control over what people perceive as true.
Bonds
The Dreaming Archive chose me, and I will discover what it wants before it decides what I am. I also owe a dangerous former employer the truth about what happened during my last job.
Flaws
Katie treats every conversation as a possible intrusion attempt. She lies reflexively when frightened, even to people who have earned her trust, and she is terrified that the Dreaming Archive can edit her memories without her noticing.
Quirks
Background
Katie was good at what she did. What she did was break into places she did not belong and steal important data from strange networks. As a human with an exceptional memory and a talent for noticing patterns, she became valuable to criminal syndicates that dealt in more than jewels and ledgers. Katie could read a room like a lock, identify the one guard who was looking in the wrong direction, and tell when a magical security system was lying about what it had seen. She never thought of herself as a thief of objects. She stole access, secrets, and certainty. Her last job was supposed to be simple. A sealed archive beneath an abandoned observatory contained a cache of intercepted messages, predictions, and surveillance records. Instead, Katie found a black glass interface surrounded by shelves of books whose pages changed whenever she looked away. The system did not contain information so much as every possible interpretation of information. When Katie tried to copy it, something answered from inside the archive. It offered her a bargain, not power exactly, but access. Katie accepted before she understood that the thing on the other side was not a database, a spirit, or anything with a human name. Now her magic arrives as edited perception, contradictory readings, and memories that do not belong to anyone in the room. The archive whispers that reality is only the version most witnesses agree upon, and Katie has begun to wonder whether she is still one of the witnesses.
