Appearance
Orion is a towering goliath with slate-gray skin, broad shoulders, and pale geometric birthmarks across his forearms that resemble branching roots. His long black hair is gathered into a high knot threaded with strips of green-dyed leather and small wooden beads. He wears practical leather armor beneath a weathered moss-green cloak, with a round wooden shield polished smooth by years of travel. Within a minute of meeting him, most people notice his unusually measured breathing and his habit of standing slightly too close, as though he has not yet learned how much space a smaller person needs. His voice is deep and resonant, normally calm enough to sound like distant thunder, but when anger or fear takes hold, his breath becomes visibly deliberate and every word arrives between slow, controlled inhalations.
Mannerisms
Orion pauses to take three slow breaths before answering difficult questions. He often tilts his head toward nearby trees or animals while speaking, as though checking whether they approve of the conversation. When seated, he unconsciously plants both feet wide apart and keeps one hand resting on his shield.
Personality
Orion is patient, observant, and intensely curious. He listens to people with the same concentration he gives to a forest at dawn, cataloging pauses, changes in breathing, and what they avoid saying. He prefers practical kindness to displays of affection, such as repairing a companion's gear, finding edible roots, or quietly taking the coldest watch. He is slow to anger, but once convinced that someone is damaging the balance of a place or exploiting the helpless, his gentleness becomes immovable resolve.
Ideals
Knowledge. The world is a text written in living things. Understanding its patterns is more valuable than possessing its treasures, and knowledge becomes meaningful only when it is used to preserve life.
Bonds
The mountain valley where Orion's clan still lives is slowly being poisoned by an unknown force. He will abandon comfort, wealth, and reputation to discover the source and restore the watershed before his people are forced to leave.
Flaws
Orion treats uncertainty as a personal failure and can become stubbornly overconfident when challenged by someone he considers less informed. He also has difficulty recognizing when his calm, towering presence is intimidating others, and he may respond to fear with lectures instead of comfort.
Quirks
Background
Orion Treechaser Gathakanathi was raised among a highland goliath clan that measured worth by endurance, judgment, and the ability to carry more than one's share. As a child, he was less interested in contests of strength than in the patterns left by migrating animals, the medicinal properties of alpine moss, and the way storms announced themselves in the behavior of birds. His clan elders called him Treechaser because he would sprint after wind-bent saplings and mark where their seeds took root, convinced that even a mountain had a memory written in living things. A winter avalanche destroyed part of his clan's traditional hunting grounds, and Orion traveled beyond the mountains to study what had caused the valley's slopes to fail. He became a sage by exchanging field observations for access to libraries and by patiently copying forgotten texts on weather, plants, beasts, and ancient druidic rites. A reclusive circle of druids eventually taught him the old language of nature and entrusted him with the responsibility of restoring damaged places rather than merely recording their destruction. Now he travels as both scholar and warden, seeking the hidden causes behind unnatural blights, vanishing beasts, and reckless settlements. He believes every mystery has roots, and that the patient investigator is the one most likely to find them.
