Appearance

Citrine is a lean, copper-skinned tiefling with swept-back black horns, golden amber eyes, and long dark hair braided with dried herbs and bits of brass wire. Their tail is narrow and expressive, usually curled around one ankle while they work. They wear weather-stained leather armor beneath a moss-green traveling coat, with a smoky quartz necklace set between two small crescent moons. Their hands are permanently marked by soil, ink, and faint green-gold stains from crushed plants and spell components.

Mannerisms

Citrine speaks softly until someone threatens an ally or animal, at which point their voice becomes unnervingly calm. They pause before answering questions, as if listening to plants in the room. When thinking, they rub the smoky quartz at their throat and count their breaths in groups of four.

Personality

Citrine is patient, observant, and unexpectedly funny in quiet moments. They are more comfortable tending a wounded animal than speaking in a crowded room, yet they possess a stubborn courage that emerges whenever someone vulnerable is endangered. Their scholarly habits make them prone to collecting names, observations, and small samples, but their time in the Feywild has taught them that not everything worth knowing can be catalogued.

Ideals

Life should be given room to recover. I will defend the vulnerable, preserve what can be healed, and make the cruel fear the consequences of treating living things as tools.

Bonds

Dahlia's memory is the center of Citrine's life. They will protect their companions, especially those who are frightened, injured, or unable to protect themselves. They have promised Diarllagran to find Star, and they consider that promise as binding as blood.

Flaws

Citrine assumes every tragedy is partly their fault and becomes reckless when someone reminds them of Dahlia's death. They distrust easy answers, authority figures, and anyone who treats living creatures as expendable. When frightened, they may overprotect others until their judgment becomes controlling.

Quirks

Names every plant they encounter, even when the plant is clearly trying to bite them.
Keeps tiny labeled packets of seeds from every memorable journey.
Refuses to say their abandoned birth name, even when asked directly.
Leaves a pinch of clean soil beside a campfire before departing.
Whispers practical advice to their shield as though it were Dahlia.
Becomes intensely delighted by unusual snails, fungi, and carnivorous flowers.

Background

Citrine was born Rivari, the only child of Dahlia, a gifted gardener whose small home was crowded with medicinal herbs, seed packets, and raw gemstones. Dahlia could coax life from poor soil and believed every stone carried a lesson. One evening, when Citrine was seven, an attacker came to their home. Dahlia threw herself between the danger and her child, dying as she shielded them. Her final word was Citrine's birth name. Citrine came to regard that word as sacred, something too precious to use casually, and abandoned it forever. They took the name Citrine from a memory of Dahlia holding a golden gemstone in the last light of day and calling her child an abundance of joy. Raised by stern grandparents, Citrine was sent to Blackstaff Academy, where they studied botany, natural philosophy, and the magical properties of living things. The academy taught them to classify plants and identify curses, but the wild taught them compassion. Citrine eventually left its ordered halls to travel, finding that the most important lessons were learned while kneeling in mud beside an injured animal or standing between a helpless creature and a blade. Their path led them to the Witchlight Carnival and then into the Feywild, where they guided their companions through dangerous marshes, rescued Lucas from sinking mud, defended a giant snail from brigands, and helped free Sir Talavar. They now carry Dahlia's ashes at their throat, search for Diarllagran's missing cub Star, and quietly wonder what became of the father they never knew.
