Appearance
Grobble is a small, wiry kobold with rust-red scales, a pale cream muzzle, oversized ears, and bright amber eyes. He wears a patched scholar's robe over a belt crowded with chalk, folded notes, ink vials, and tiny copper charms. His spellbook is bound in blue-dyed leather and has been chewed along the lower corner, a nervous habit he has never managed to stop. Within a minute of meeting someone, it becomes obvious that Grobble rarely looks at faces. His eyes dart instead to doorways, ceiling beams, pockets, weapons, and any object that might conceal a secret.
Mannerisms
Grobble tilts his head sharply whenever someone speaks, as if listening for hidden meanings beneath the words. He counts doorways under his breath, taps his spellbook three times before casting, and addresses dangerous magical objects in a polite whisper before touching them.
Personality
Grobble is intensely curious, suspicious of authority, and far more courageous when investigating a mystery than when facing a straightforward fight. He speaks quickly, changes topics without warning, and assumes every locked door is hiding either priceless knowledge or a very embarrassing mistake. Though he claims to value independence above all else, he quietly watches over companions and becomes fiercely protective when someone is mocked for being strange.
Ideals
Knowledge should belong to whoever is brave enough to pursue it. Traditions deserve respect only after they survive examination.
Bonds
Balastar, the blue dragonborn paladin, was the first person to defend Grobble's right to learn. Grobble carries a cracked blue glass bead from Balastar's prayer cord and intends to repay the debt, even if he has to steal a dragon's secret to do it. He also dreams of returning to his tribe with proof that his magic can protect them.
Flaws
Grobble cannot resist correcting inaccurate statements, especially when doing so is tactically unwise. He hoards information, distrusts anyone who asks him to destroy a book, and has a terrible habit of treating allies as test subjects for theoretical magical questions.
Quirks
Background
Grobble was born beneath a basalt ridge where his kobold tribe guarded a maze of natural tunnels and old draconic carvings. From the moment he could hold a bone stylus, he copied symbols instead of learning the proper ways to set snares. His experiments began with harmless sparks and whispering lights, then escalated to a levitating cooking pot, a tunnel wall that briefly spoke in his own voice, and one disastrous attempt to summon a spectral claw. The tribe elder called his magic dangerous, unnatural, and embarrassingly loud. Grobble was driven out with his notes, his half-chewed spellbook, and strict instructions never to return unless he had learned respect for tradition. He nearly starved before meeting Balastar, a blue dragonborn paladin who found him arguing with a roadside sign because Grobble believed it contained an encoded warning. Balastar did not treat him as a monster or a failed kobold. Instead, the paladin helped him find libraries, teachers, and honest work copying maps. Grobble became a sage by necessity, trading translations and obscure historical facts for meals while pursuing the arcane discipline his tribe feared. He still follows Balastar when their paths cross, though he insists this is because the paladin is an excellent source of field research and not because Grobble considers him family.
