Appearance
Katik Torgal is a broad-shouldered human man with a weathered, athletic build earned through military drills and years of walking from one frontier to the next. His dark hair is kept short and practical, though an uneven lock at his temple is always falling loose. He wears his chain mail beneath a blue-gray surcoat repaired with careful, visible stitching. His shield is old army issue, polished far more often than his armor, and bears a simple painted sun crossed by a sword. Within a minute of meeting him, most people notice that his eyes constantly move toward exits, high windows, and the hands of anyone nearby. When he realizes he is doing it, he deliberately looks back at the speaker and listens.
Mannerisms
Katik checks the straps of his shield whenever he enters a new room, taps two fingers against his holy symbol before making a difficult choice, and quietly counts his breaths during moments of fear. He addresses servants, guards, and nobles with the same formal courtesy, but becomes visibly uncomfortable when praised.
Personality
Katik is earnest, restless, and stubbornly compassionate. He tries to sound like the knight he imagines himself becoming, but his military bluntness often breaks through the ceremony. He is quick to stand between danger and a stranger, slow to accept comfort, and unexpectedly gentle with frightened animals and children. He respects courage in every form, including the courage to admit fear.
Ideals
Goodness must be chosen repeatedly. The world may contain demons, tyrants, and cowards, but every freely given act of protection proves that evil is not inevitable.
Bonds
Ilona's memory is the standard by which Katik measures himself. He carries a small brass clasp from her cloak and will risk himself to protect people who remind him of the helplessness he felt that night.
Flaws
He confuses suspicion with wisdom and often assumes that any unexplained kindness hides a trap. He is also too willing to chase demons, cults, and rumors alone, because asking others to share his danger feels like risking another Ilona.

Background
Katik Torgal grew up in a hard-working human settlement on the edge of settled roads and wild country. He and Ilona Varga were inseparable from childhood, first as companions who stole apples from the same orchard, then as young adults who promised to build a life together after Katik became a knight. Ilona was not merely his sweetheart. She was the person who believed in his courage before he had any proof of it, and the person who could make him laugh when he was trying too hard to appear fearless. That future ended when a demon came through the settlement during a night of torchlight, smoke, and screaming. Ilona and Katik's oldest friend, Bence, were brutally murdered while trying to protect others. Katik survived because a wounded shrine keeper dragged him beneath a collapsed wagon. In the days afterward, he swore before the shrine's weathered altar that he would become the knight he had always dreamed of being, not for glory, but to prove that cruelty had not claimed the whole world. He enlisted as a soldier, learned discipline, marching, and the grim arithmetic of battle, then left the army to travel the realm in search of the demon and of the person he might become. His devotion is still young and imperfect, but every act of mercy is a small declaration that goodness remains real.
