Appearance
Morthos is a lean, broad-shouldered tiefling with deep crimson skin, swept-back black horns, ember-gold eyes, and a long tail tipped with a spade-shaped point. His dark hair is worn in a messy mane, and faint black marks resembling curling script run along his neck and forearms. He wears scuffed leather armor beneath a charcoal traveling coat, with a red scarf tied around his throat and an iron shovel strapped across his pack.
Mannerisms
Morthos tilts his head and taps one horn when suspicious. He punctuates dramatic statements by flicking the tip of his tail, and he smiles broadly whenever someone nervously calls him dangerous.
Personality
Morthos is theatrical, irreverent, and far more compassionate than he wants people to notice. He enjoys intimidating bullies, bargaining with authorities, and making grand entrances, but he quietly leaves food, coins, or protective charms for struggling families. He treats his patron like a dangerous business partner rather than a master, which is either admirable confidence or spectacular foolishness.
Ideals
Freedom. No creature, mortal or fiend, has the right to decide what another person is allowed to become. Morthos will break laws, traditions, and promises before he accepts a cage.
Bonds
The people of his home village gave him a second chance, and Morthos will risk anything to defend them from those who prey on the helpless. He also intends to discover the true purpose of his fiendish pact before his patron can collect its price.
Flaws
Morthos is quick to interpret suspicion as an insult and often escalates a disagreement simply to prove that he cannot be pushed around. He is also dangerously curious about fiendish bargains, especially when he believes he can outsmart the being offering one.
Quirks
Background
Morthos was born in a farming village where his horns, tail, and red skin made every stranger suspicious. One winter evening, a traveling magistrate mistook him for a devil responsible for a string of unexplained fires. The accusation spread quickly, and Morthos fled into the hills rather than let frightened villagers drag him to a pyre. There, cornered in an abandoned shrine, he encountered a fiend who offered him power in exchange for a pact. Morthos accepted, partly to survive and partly to prove that if the world insisted on calling him a devil, it should at least learn what a devil could really look like. When he returned, Morthos found the fires had been started by the magistrate's men to drive villagers from their land. Using the strange magic granted by his patron, Morthos exposed the plot and rescued several families from a burning barn. The village finally hailed him as a hero, though Morthos remains uncertain whether they love him or merely fear disappointing the creature they once condemned. He now wanders as a pact-bound adventurer, seeking both worthy causes and opportunities to make his patron regret giving him free will.
