Appearance
Shesha Mtembe is a lean, medium-height human man with warm brown skin weathered by years of travel, sun, and roadside work. His black hair is kept short and practical, with a narrow woven cord tied behind one ear. He has steady hazel-brown eyes, a long expressive mouth, and callused fingertips stained by ink, wax, and cheap costume pigments. His voice is soft and breathy when calm, with a faint rasp from years of sleeping in dust and smoke. When frightened or angry, his breath catches between words and his careful speech breaks into quick, whispered fragments.
Mannerisms
He pauses before entering any room, taking one quiet breath as if tasting the air. When bargaining, he rubs his thumb over the edge of a playing card. When rattled, his breath becomes audible and his normally smooth voice slips into a rapid, sibilant whisper.
Personality
Shesha is attentive, gracious, and difficult to surprise. He treats conversation like a card game, remembering small details and offering people exactly the reassurance they seem to need. Beneath his practiced warmth is a watchful conscience. He dislikes cruelty disguised as law, wealth, or respectability, and he becomes unexpectedly stubborn when someone powerful preys on someone with no protection.
Ideals
Mercy. A clever lie should shield the vulnerable, not feed the powerful. If the truth cannot protect someone, Shesha will find another tool.
Bonds
He carries the marked deck that began his career and refuses to abandon anyone who has trusted one of his identities. He is determined to uncover the true name and purpose of the presence behind the black mirror.
Flaws
He lies reflexively when the truth would be safer, especially if admitting ignorance or fear might make him appear powerless. He is also terrified that the Listener Beneath Still Water can hear every private thought, so he sometimes sabotages friendships before they become intimate enough to expose him.
Quirks
Background
Shesha Mtembe was raised among human traders, dockside interpreters, and traveling performers in a river city where a convincing story could be worth more than a full purse. His mother taught him the practical arts of disguise and forgery, while his uncle taught him how to read a room before entering it. Shesha became unusually good at making frightened people feel safe, which was useful when he sold counterfeit blessings, forged travel permits, and cures that were mostly colored water. He told himself that his deceptions were harmless because he targeted the greedy and cruel, but some of his lies eventually endangered people who had trusted him. While hiding from the consequences of one particularly ambitious fraud, Shesha took shelter in an abandoned shrine beneath an old counting house. There he found a sealed black mirror that whispered into his thoughts without moving its lips. The presence beyond it offered knowledge in exchange for service, and Shesha accepted before he understood that the agreement had already begun. His patron, an alien Great Old One known to him only as the Listener Beneath Still Water, now sends him fragments of impossible dreams and half-heard instructions. Shesha uses his new powers to expose predators, rescue the desperate, and repair the harm caused by his old schemes, though he fears that every good deed makes him more useful to the thing that owns his secret.
