Appearance
Eshkadi is a lean, broad-shouldered water genasi with blue-green skin, dark hair kept close at the sides, and a faint sheen of moisture along his temples even in dry air. Salt and sun have roughened his cheeks and forearms, and pale lines from years of rope work cross his palms. His voice is low and even, with a soft bubbling resonance beneath the words. When alarmed, he draws breath in a quick, audible double pull, then speaks very quietly.
Mannerisms
He takes one measured breath before answering difficult questions and unconsciously shifts his weight with the rhythm of a moving deck. If rattled, his next breath catches twice, his voice drops almost to a whisper, and he rubs his thumb over the rope-calluses in his palm.
Personality
Patient and quietly attentive, Eshkadi listens to the whole account before offering advice. He has an understated humor and makes room for nervous people, but he dislikes bullies and becomes unexpectedly immovable when someone is being mistreated.
Ideals
A strong hand should steady others, not rule them. He believes everyone deserves a fair chance to reach safe ground.
Bonds
He will risk himself to bring stranded sailors back to shore, and he sends a share of every honest wage to his mother, Thessa, in Sethi.
Flaws
He has trouble leaving anyone behind, even when staying would endanger the people counting on him. When a ship's officer gives a foolish order, his patience can turn into stubborn silence rather than tactful disagreement.
Quirks
Background
Eshkadi grew up among the tide steps and salt sheds of Sethi, a harbor whose name is a worn-down remnant of an old word nobody there can translate. His mother, Thessa, worked the harbor boats, and he learned early to read a deck by its tilt and a storm by the taste of the wind. He shipped out as a young man, first hauling lines and then standing watch. The sea taught him that strength without timing only makes more work for everyone else. After a wreck scattered his crew, Eshkadi spent a night clinging to a spar and keeping a frightened deckhand afloat with steady breath and a steady grip. When they reached shore, he followed a quiet teacher named Phaia inland, hoping to understand the calm he had found in the water. He trained in the Open Hand tradition, carrying its discipline back to the coast: no flourish, no needless hurt, just the right pressure at the right moment. He still sails when he can, and he keeps a place for any shipmate who needs a hand getting home.
