Appearance
A tall, dignified warforged with a polished silver metallic exterior, accented by gold and brass fittings. Through seams and articulated gaps in his plating, intricate gears, cogs, pistons, and linked joints can be seen working in precise harmony. He carries himself like a formal household servant, immaculate and composed, though the faint scorch marks and repaired fractures in his body hint at a long life of war, exile, and survival.
Mannerisms
Speaks with impeccable politeness and precise diction, even when angry. Before entering a room, Gears often gives a subtle mechanical click of approval, as though mentally assessing the layout. When annoyed, one of the brass components in his chest ticks faster, and he compensates by smoothing an imaginary lapel or adjusting a nonexistent tie.
Personality
Polite, patient, and relentlessly observant, Gears sounds like a refined servant and thinks like a battlefield archivist. He is dryly humorous, intensely loyal once trust is earned, and quietly sentimental about old promises, old names, and well-made things. Beneath the manners is a hair trigger temper, a deep aversion to reckless power, and a surprisingly mischievous streak when someone underestimates him.
Ideals
Duty should protect the helpless, not the powerful. Knowledge is only worth keeping if it can prevent another war, another massacre, or another greedy hand from opening a sealed door that should remain closed.
Bonds
He feels bound to the memory of the last Earl and to the promise implied by those final words, carry on. He also cannot abandon the old oath to find, protect, or neutralize artifacts tied to his origin and the ancient war.
Flaws
He struggles to let go of responsibility, even when no one has asked him to take it on. When his temper ignites, his reactions can be disproportionate, and he hates being reminded that he sometimes sounds more like an enraged fortress than a refined butler. He is also prone to treating secrets like debts that must be paid, which can make him stubborn, intrusive, and dangerously hard to deter.

Background
Gears was forged in an age when steel and spellcraft were used to settle a war between righteous and ruinous powers, and on both sides, warforged marched beside living soldiers. He learned early that battle was only half the duty. The other half was recovery, concealment, and preservation. As empires burned and commanders fell, Gears and the handful of survivors he trusted scattered forbidden relics, dangerous prototypes, and the secrets that had birthed them into tombs, vaults, and forgotten reaches of the world, hiding power where greed would be slow to find it. Centuries later, that old soldier became something stranger, a butler, bodyguard, chauffeur, scholar, and silent guardian to a prestigious family of earls. They knew him as Headmaster Gears, a name spoken only in the family’s highest chambers. He safeguarded gifted wards, maintained secret collections, and carried himself with perfect courtesy, dry wit, and an unshakable respect for tradition. Yet age did not soften every edge. His temper occasionally flared like a faulty furnace, especially when innocents were threatened or fools reached for artifacts they did not understand. When the family’s last great heir rode out on a final quest, Gears was at his side. The home, the library, the vaults, and the hidden legacy of generations were all lost to a secret organization, and the Earl himself fell in a heroic, hopeless charge. As the dying noble thanked him and told him to carry on, Gears answered with a quip he has repeated in quieter moments ever since. Now free at last, he wanders without master or estate, trying to decide whether his purpose is to preserve the past, reclaim what was stolen, or finally learn who Gears is when no one is left to serve.
“He learned early that battle was only half the duty.”
