Appearance
Atug is broad-shouldered and unmistakably half-orc, with warm gray-green skin, a strong jaw, and lower tusks that show when he grins. In a room, his attention goes first to the smallest person and the nearest exit, then to whoever seems to be giving orders. His patched travel clothes fit poorly across his shoulders, but he keeps a little wooden bird, carved by his mother, carefully wrapped in clean cloth. He carries his greataxe openly and wears his confidence like a challenge.
Mannerisms
Atug plants himself between a vulnerable person and whoever is speaking to them. He answers questions with his chin held high, and often starts a boast before he has figured out how he will accomplish what he promised.
Personality
Loudly confident, generous with food and shelter, and impatient with anyone who uses rank as an excuse to be cruel. Atug likes to make frightened people laugh, but he bristles when someone tells him to wait.
Ideals
Protection. Strength is a promise to stand between the helpless and those who would prey on them, not a right to command anyone.
Bonds
He keeps his mother's carved wooden bird wrapped in cloth and will risk himself to protect families from being driven out of their homes. He hopes to make the people of Plough and Crown safe enough that they no longer need a hero.
Flaws
Atug is so sure that he can handle any danger that he sometimes charges in before learning who is at risk or what the danger actually is. His hatred of nobles makes him quick to assume the worst, even when a careful conversation could help the people he wants to defend.
Quirks
Background
Atug grew up among the human farmers and mill hands who raised his mother, Noma. His half-orc strength made him useful hauling timber and breaking stubborn soil, and his size made him certain he could stand between his neighbors and any trouble. He mistook being able to lift a cart for being able to stop the world. When rent collectors arrived on behalf of their noble master, they took the harvest, the seed grain, and then the family home. Atug fought back, but he could not save Noma from the hardship and sickness that followed. Her last gift to him was a small wooden bird, and her last lesson was that strength meant little if it served only its owner. Years later, Atug faced a bailiff who was driving a family from their cottage over a debt they could never repay. He smashed the bailiff's wagon axle, stood between the guards and the villagers, and helped the family escape. The story spread through the surrounding farms, where people began to offer him meals and places to sleep. Atug calls himself a hero with such conviction that even his friends sometimes have to remind him that confidence is not the same as a plan. He travels now with a greataxe, a bundle of javelins, and a promise to protect the weak, especially when the powerful insist that the weak should know their place.
