Appearance
Wryen is a lean tiefling with warm umber skin, swept-back horns banded in plain brass, and a narrow tail that keeps a slow, thoughtful rhythm. Their robe is an old, badly fitted blue-gray garment, repeatedly patched at the elbows and hem; a small prayer cord is carefully washed and mended. They stand with their weight slightly forward and move with quick, quiet steps. When their magic stirs, fine gold scales glimmer briefly along their collarbones.
Mannerisms
Wryen rubs a thumb over the prayer cord before making a promise. They pause before answering a question, as though checking whether the answer will help. When standing still, they tap the floor once with the end of their tail.
Personality
Warm in a crisis and irreverent in a ceremony, Wryen notices who has been left out of the conversation. They prefer a useful disagreement to a polite lie, and can be unexpectedly gentle with the frightened.
Ideals
Mercy should be practical. A prayer that does not feed, shelter, or comfort someone is only a sound.
Bonds
Wryen keeps the shrine's water-stained prayer book, and sends what help they can to Tesh and the families still living at Siltwash. They feel responsible for making sure the forgotten dead there are remembered by name.
Flaws
Wryen is quick to distrust any rule presented as sacred, even when it protects someone vulnerable. They will spend their last strength or spell on a stranger, then lie about how badly they need help.
Quirks
Background
Wryen grew up among the families who kept the shrine at Siltwash, a settlement built after workers drained a marsh that had swallowed the old road. Their tiefling horns and the faint gold scales that sometimes showed at their throat made them a ready target for other people's fears. The shrine's keeper, Tesh, taught them to read prayers aloud, copy names for the dead, and sit with people who had no coin for a healer. Wryen learned the rites, but never mistook reverence for obedience.
