Appearance
Turts is a broad-shelled male tortle with warm olive-green skin, a weather-darkened shell patterned in muted bands of moss green and brown, and calm amber eyes. His shell bears tiny painted symbols marking places where he has meditated, most of them faded by rain and travel. He wears simple monk's robes altered with visible hand-stitching to fit around his shell, a carefully wrapped ochre sash, and a pair of soft sandals whose straps have been repaired many times. His hands are callused from staff practice and herb gathering, while the edges of his shell are polished from years of brushing against stone walls, tree trunks, and doorways.
Mannerisms
Turts pauses before answering difficult questions, lowering his head as if listening to a distant current. He often rubs one thumb along the edge of his shell while thinking, and he counts his breaths under his breath when angered.
Personality
Turts is gentle, observant, and unfailingly polite, even when confronting danger. He speaks with deliberate calm and enjoys asking simple questions that reveal complicated truths. He is fascinated by ordinary details, such as the smell of rain on roof tiles or the way a person's footsteps change when they are frightened. Beneath his serenity is a firm protective instinct and a surprisingly dry sense of humor.
Ideals
Balance. Strength exists to protect the vulnerable, not to dominate them. Every action should restore harmony rather than feed anger.
Bonds
The hilltop hermitage and its aging caretaker are his spiritual home. He has sworn to protect the riverside communities that once sheltered him, especially the children who remind him of his own restless beginnings.
Flaws
Turts is slow to admit when patience has failed. He can mistake stubborn endurance for wisdom, and he sometimes gives dangerous people one chance too many because he cannot bear to believe that anyone is beyond renewal.
Quirks
Background
Turts was hatched near a quiet stretch of river where tortle families traded dried fish, medicinal roots, and hand-carved tools with passing travelers. Even as a young tortle, he was more interested in the rhythm of movement than in the bustle of commerce. He watched herons strike the water, river stones roll beneath the current, and old pilgrims cross the village bridge with deliberate, balanced steps. When a wandering monk became ill at the riverside shrine, Turts tended him with local herbs. In return, the monk taught him that discipline was not the denial of life, but a way of meeting every moment without being swept away by it. Turts eventually withdrew to a lonely hilltop hermitage, where he studied medicinal plants, copied old prayers, and practiced martial forms until his movements became as steady as the turning seasons. During years of silence, he experienced a revelation: every living thing seemed connected by an unseen current, and violence disturbed that current long after the blow was struck. He now travels to test whether this insight can survive the noise and cruelty of the wider world. Turts prefers to solve problems with patience and open hands, but he will stand between danger and the helpless without hesitation. He believes that even a hardened enemy may yet return to balance, though he is slowly learning that mercy without boundaries can become another form of harm.
