Appearance
A broad-shouldered human veteran with weathered tan skin, a scar that cuts through one eyebrow, and close-cropped dark hair streaked with early silver. He wears polished chain mail beneath a soldier's cloak, keeps his shield carefully painted with a faded company emblem, and carries himself with the stiff discipline of someone who has spent years learning to stand at attention even when no one is watching.
Mannerisms
Tavian stands at attention when introduced, even in taverns. He unconsciously counts exits, windows, and cover, and when listening he rubs his thumb over the edge of his shield strap as if checking for readiness. In conversation he answers directly, rarely wasting words, and when frustrated he exhales through his nose like a drill sergeant trying not to shout.
Personality
Disciplined, protective, and quietly dry-witted. Tavian treats promises as sacred, children as untouchable, and cowardice only as a sin when it harms others. He does not seek glory, but he is deeply competitive about competence, and he respects anyone who does hard work well.
Ideals
Duty. A soldier's first job is to protect the people who cannot hold the line themselves. Peace is only real when ordinary folk can sleep without fear of boots at the door.
Bonds
He still carries the brass button from the uniform of the captain who died saving his squad, and he will not let that sacrifice be forgotten. Tavian sends what coin he can to his family, and he is determined to come home with enough honor and wealth to buy them a life that war cannot touch.
Flaws
Tavian measures his own worth in usefulness, and he has trouble resting when others are in danger. He distrusts noble promises and polished speeches, assuming that anyone who talks too smoothly is hiding the true cost of their plans. If a commander gives an order that smells like cowardice dressed as strategy, he may openly challenge it, even when silence would serve him better.
Quirks
Background
Tavian Holt was forged in the border wars of a kingdom that preferred to spend coin on banners instead of food. Born the eldest son of a wheelwright, he grew up strong, quick, and stubborn, the sort of boy who learned early that a human life could be built from grit alone. When conscription riders came to his village, Tavian enlisted to keep his younger siblings from the draft. He discovered that he had a talent not just for surviving battle, but for reading it. He learned how to move men as much as steel, how to hold a line when fear made stronger hearts tremble, and how to turn a retreat into an ordered withdrawal instead of a slaughter.
