Appearance
A lean, sharp-featured human man with neatly trimmed black hair, pale green eyes, and a carefully maintained mustache. He dresses like a respectable traveling merchant in fine but subdued clothing, with a dark leather coat concealing his arcane focus and weapons. A thin scar crosses his left palm, the mark left by the infernal contract that granted him power.
Mannerisms
Edric straightens his cuffs before telling a lie and taps twice on any written contract before signing it. He addresses strangers by title whenever possible, even when he is mocking them.
Personality
Edric is unfailingly polite, observant, and controlled. He enjoys constructing elaborate explanations for simple actions and treats every conversation as a negotiation. Beneath his polished confidence is a constant fear that someone will discover which of his identities is real.
Ideals
Order. The world is ruled by contracts, laws, and obligations. The person who understands the rules best is the person who controls the outcome.
Bonds
He possesses the original forged document that ruined the magistrate, and he will risk everything to expose the truth behind it. He also secretly protects a younger apprentice who believes Edric is still an honest merchant.
Flaws
He cannot resist improving a lie, even when the truth would serve him better. He also assumes every promise has a hidden cost, including his own promises to others.
Quirks
Background
Edric Vale was born to an ordinary human family of clerks and minor legal advocates. From an early age, he discovered that a confident voice and a convincing seal could open more doors than honest labor. He became a traveling confidence artist, selling counterfeit property deeds, fake miracle tonics, and invented introductions to wealthy patrons. Edric considered himself a professional rather than a criminal, because he always kept meticulous records and never cheated anyone more than he believed they could afford. His luck ended when he forged documents implicating a powerful magistrate in a land theft scheme. The magistrate retaliated by destroying Edric's false identities, ruining his reputation, and arranging for his arrest. Cornered in an abandoned courthouse, Edric found a contract written in Infernal beneath a loose floorstone. The agreement offered him the power to escape, in exchange for service to a devilish patron whose exact identity remains hidden behind layers of legal phrasing. Edric signed, and an infernal flame consumed his forged papers while eldritch power filled his veins. Now he travels under the name Edric Vale, though that may not be his birth name, seeking loopholes in his pact, useful secrets, and enough influence to make himself impossible for either the magistrate or his patron to discard.
