Appearance
Bokk is a lean, wiry hobgoblin of average height, built for speed and endurance rather than raw power. His pale, sickly grayish-red skin is marked by old scars that stand out like faded threads. His sharp face has high cheekbones, a pointed chin, and pale watery-blue eyes that constantly dart from person to person. Greasy dark-brown hair is pulled into a loose, untidy ponytail, with stringy strands often falling across his face. His left ear bears a tarnished silver ring. He wears scavenged scale mail beneath a dented steel breastplate, patched leather greaves, a threadbare brown tunic, and a tattered dark wool cloak. Crude dwarven runes cover his forearms, and a worn leather satchel hangs from his shoulder. His notched shortswords and longbow are maintained just well enough to remain dangerous.
Mannerisms
Bokk speaks rapidly in a nervous, uneven cadence, often interrupting himself to correct minor details. He scans doors, windows, rooftops, and the hands of everyone nearby. When lying, he rubs the tarnished ring in his left ear. When anxious, he taps two fingers against his shortsword hilt in the rhythm of a marching cadence.
Personality
Bokk is a bundle of constant nervous energy, quick gestures, darting eyes, and forced confidence. He is observant, suspicious, and socially nimble, able to flatter a superior while quietly calculating how to replace him. He pretends to be bolder and more disciplined than he feels, using rapid speech and military jargon to conceal fear. He is not needlessly cruel, but he treats mercy as a resource that should be spent only when it produces a useful return.
Ideals
Order. The strong rule because someone must decide, and obedience is preferable to chaos. Bokk does not believe authority is good, only that it is useful when he is the one holding it.
Bonds
He keeps the tarnished silver ring from his first commander, the only person who once treated him as more than expendable labor. Bokk secretly intends to find the commander's surviving family, not out of affection, but because the family may possess records proving his former rivals cheated him of a military promotion and stolen pay.
Flaws
Bokk assumes every kindness is a transaction and every promise conceals a trap. He will betray an ally if doing so offers a clear path to safety, profit, or advancement. His hunger for control makes him reckless when he feels ignored, humiliated, or replaceable, and he cannot resist proving that he is more clever than the people around him.
Quirks
Background
Bokk was orphaned before he was old enough to remember his parents, and he grew up in the shadow of goblin warbands, mercenary companies, and border conflicts. As a hobgoblin, he was expected to understand discipline and obedience, but he quickly learned that rank alone was not enough to keep him alive. He watched officers rise through intimidation, bribery, and carefully timed betrayals. Bokk became an expert at reading fear in a superior's face, noticing which soldier was about to desert, and identifying the moment when loyalty became a liability. He survived by making himself useful, first as a scavenger and runner, then as a scout, interrogator, and battlefield tracker. His military career advanced through opportunism rather than heroism. Bokk could find a trail through ash, mud, or snow, and he learned to make the wilderness itself serve as a weapon. He cultivated a reputation for discovering enemy camps, sabotaging supply lines, and returning with prisoners who knew exactly what their captors wanted to hear. His promotion to officer came after a superior vanished during a disastrous campaign. Bokk claimed the man had died in an ambush, then quietly sold the officer's maps and private correspondence to three different buyers. Now he travels as a ranger and former soldier, taking contracts that offer money, leverage, or protection. He wants no glorious conquest. He wants a position from which nobody can safely betray him, and enough power to make every potential enemy hesitate.
