Appearance
A lean elven wizard with silver-black hair tied back in a scholar's knot, pale green eyes, and ink-stained fingers. They wear a weathered robe over practical travel clothes, with a quarterstaff carved in precise geometric runes and a satchel heavy with notes, parchment, and spell components. Their expression is often attentive and mildly distracted, as if always listening to a conversation no one else can hear.
Mannerisms
They speak in precise, complete sentences and often annotate their own thoughts aloud. When thinking, they tap the ferrule of their staff against the floor in patterns that resemble a counting rhyme. They instinctively straighten crooked books, map margins, and labels on potion shelves.
Personality
Patient, intensely curious, and quietly exacting. Lethariel listens longer than most people expect, then asks the one question that cuts straight to the heart of a mystery. They are courteous to a fault, but their courtesy has the sharp edge of someone who believes ignorance is a solvable problem.
Ideals
Knowledge is a lantern, and every lost truth rescued from darkness makes the world safer for those who follow. Secrets are not trophies, they are responsibilities.
Bonds
They carry a leather-bound history of a vanished arcanist consortium, copied by hand from fragments too fragile to transport. Its final pages are missing, and Lethariel has sworn to recover them, not for fame, but because the name of their first mentor is said to appear in the margins. They also feel a fierce responsibility toward any library, archive, or oral tradition that might otherwise be lost to war, greed, or neglect.
Flaws
Lethariel trusts books more readily than people, and assumes every problem has a proper classification, even when it does not. They can become so intent on finishing a line of research that they ignore hunger, danger, or wounded pride in everyone around them. If contradicted by an ignorant fool, they may smile politely and then spend three days proving the fool wrong.
Quirks
Background
Lethariel Vael spent more years in libraries than in forests, though as an elf the difference often felt thinner than outsiders assumed. Born to a family that valued memory over wealth, they drifted between monasteries, manor archives, and candlelit university stacks, trading labor for access to sealed collections and incomplete histories. While others learned court etiquette or the bow, Lethariel learned how old empires encoded their secrets in commentaries, footnotes, and half-burned marginalia. Their fascination with the lost theory of magic became an obsession, then a vocation, and finally a calling when they discovered that the oldest texts were not merely records but instructions.
