Appearance
Combat Wombat is a broad, heavily muscled male tortle with ochre-green scales, a dark umber shell, and amber eyes that rarely blink. His shell is reinforced with iron bands, chalk marks, and small brass hooks holding spell components. He walks with a deliberate sideways roll, favoring his left side because his shell is weighted with hidden compartments. Within a minute of meeting him, most people notice that he constantly taps one claw against the nearest hard surface, as if counting down to an explosion. His wizardly robes are cut short in back to accommodate his shell and stitched with red thread in the shape of crude arcane diagrams.
Mannerisms
He rolls his shoulders before casting, taps a claw against his shell while thinking, and leans forward as though preparing to charge even during polite conversation. When someone says his name, he pauses for one silent count before answering.
Personality
Combat Wombat is blunt, confrontational, and theatrically confident. He enjoys turning ordinary conversations into contests of intimidation, but he is not foolish. He studies exits, watches hands, and remembers every slight. In combat he becomes unnervingly focused, treating allies as pieces on a board and enemies as targets in a demonstration.
Ideals
Freedom. Every law is a shackle invented by someone too weak to enforce their desires openly. The only honest rule is the one imposed by whoever has the power to make it hurt.
Bonds
His stolen spellbook contains the final unfinished theorem of his former mentor, and he will slaughter anyone who tries to take it from him. He also maintains a coded debt to the river-port thieves who first gave him work and considers their enemies his enemies.
Flaws
He is cruel when embarrassed and responds to correction with threats, sabotage, or disproportionate violence. Combat Wombat is also incurably possessive. He would rather destroy a useful object than let someone else borrow it, and he often mistakes fear for respect.
Quirks
Background
Combat Wombat grew up in a river-port settlement where tortles were welcomed as laborers, guards, and curiosities, but rarely trusted with secrets. He discovered an aptitude for magic while helping a smuggling ring move contraband through flooded tunnels. At first, he used simple spells to dry ledgers, conceal footprints, and unlock sealed crates. Then he learned that fire was a more persuasive form of bookkeeping. His nickname began as a joke about his stubbornness and his habit of charging directly through trouble. After he incinerated a rival crew and kept their spellbook, nobody laughed when they said it anymore. He later apprenticed himself to an eccentric evoker who valued his physical toughness and ruthless imagination. Combat Wombat never became a disciplined scholar, but he became very good at making dangerous magic happen exactly where he wanted it. He now works as a criminal spellcaster, bodyguard, and occasional assassin, taking jobs that promise rare magical knowledge or revenge against anyone who treats him as a mere beast. He believes civilization is only a shell over violence, and he is eager to crack it open.
