Appearance
Nadira is a medium-height human woman with a broad, sturdy build and tightly coiled black hair usually wrapped in a faded indigo scarf. Her eyes rarely settle on faces. Instead, they move to doorways, hands, windows, and the empty space above someone's shoulder, as though she is tracking an unseen conversation. Within a minute of meeting her, people notice her teeth and jaw. One lower canine sits slightly forward, giving her smile an odd, practical sharpness, and she chews slowly with her mouth closed, measuring every bite before she speaks. She dresses like a temple copyist who has begun sleeping outdoors, in layered robes beneath a weathered traveling coat, with ink-stained cuffs and a brass holy symbol worn smooth by her thumb.
Mannerisms
Nadira angles her body toward exits during conversations and rubs her holy symbol with her thumb whenever she hears a lie. She pauses before answering simple questions, as if checking whether another voice has answered first. When irritated, she arranges nearby objects into straight lines without seeming to notice.
Personality
Nadira is patient with the frightened, skeptical of the confident, and unexpectedly funny when exhausted. She speaks softly enough that people lean toward her, then uses the moment to study their hands. She dislikes grand speeches, loves careful handwriting, and treats every locked door as a question rather than an obstacle.
Ideals
Mercy. A frightened person deserves help before judgment, and even a dangerous truth should be handled with care.
Bonds
I will recover the missing leaves of my temple's first prayer book and return them to the shrine, no matter who wants them kept hidden.
Flaws
When someone claims certainty about divine or supernatural matters, I become quietly determined to prove them wrong, even when doing so puts innocent people at risk.
Quirks
Background
Nadira grew up in a small shrine devoted to a patient, many-named god of roads and thresholds. Her family had no claim to the temple, but the old priest allowed her to stay after discovering that she could reproduce unfamiliar handwriting after seeing it only once. She became a copyist, then a keeper of offerings, then the person frightened pilgrims sought when the temple lamps began going out by themselves. Her work was humble, but she learned that prayers left marks. Some were warm and bright. Others looked like writing pressed into paper from the other side. The pact began with a page that was not in the temple's archive. It appeared inside a sealed book, written in a script that changed whenever Nadira blinked. The voice behind it did not ask for worship, blood, or obedience. It asked her to carry certain words beyond the shrine and to never copy them exactly twice. In return, the voice taught her how to make darkness answer when called. Nadira believes the presence may be an imprisoned saint, a forgotten devil, or something older than either, but she refuses to decide until she finds the missing section of the temple's oldest prayer book. She left the shrine with the priest's blessing, three days of food, and the uneasy certainty that the voice had been waiting for her since childhood.
“She became a copyist, then a keeper of offerings, then the person frightened pilgrims sought when the temple lamps began going out by themselves.”
