Appearance
Jat Rick Paine is a lean, medium-sized human man with wind-browned skin, ash-brown hair worn in a practical braid, and alert gray-green eyes that seem to measure every room for exits, bookshelves, and unattended candle flames. His long fingers are permanently stained with blue-black ink, with calluses along the sides of his thumbs from years of copying manuscripts and grinding pigments. He dresses in layered scholar's robes beneath a weatherproof traveling coat, its inner lining covered in tiny stitched diagrams of stars, doors, and elemental symbols. A quarterstaff serves as both walking stick and arcane focus, its head wrapped in copper wire and old red thread.
Mannerisms
Jat pauses before answering difficult questions and silently traces a letter in the air with one ink-stained finger. When concentrating, he presses his thumb against the copper wire of his staff. He addresses books and spellbooks as if they are elderly colleagues.
Personality
Jat is courteous, observant, and relentlessly curious. He prefers questions to declarations and listens carefully for the one detail everyone else overlooked. Though bookish and physically unimposing, he is quietly brave when knowledge, innocent people, or cultural history are threatened. He enjoys dry humor, strong tea, and correcting misleading labels.
Ideals
Knowledge belongs in the hands of those who can use it to help others. A secret that can save a life should not remain locked away merely because its keeper enjoys feeling important.
Bonds
The monastery library that raised him is threatened by a wealthy collector who intends to strip it of its rarest volumes. Jat has sworn to recover stolen books, preserve endangered knowledge, and protect the people whose lives depend on the information hidden inside them.
Flaws
He treats uncertainty as a personal insult and may spend dangerous amounts of time proving a minor point. Jat also has a habit of correcting people during emotional conversations, especially when they misuse historical terms.
Quirks
Background
Jat Rick Paine was raised in the upper rooms of a monastery library, where his mother repaired bindings and his father catalogued donations from nobles who preferred their generosity to be remembered. The boy learned early that books were not quiet objects. They creaked in damp weather, shed dust when offended, and carried the habits of every hand that had touched them. He became a copyist before he became a wizard, mastering calligrapher's supplies, ancient alphabets, and the patient discipline of checking the same line seven times before trusting it. His gift for magic emerged while restoring a damaged treatise on elemental theory. The missing words appeared in sparks across the page, and Jat instinctively shaped them into a harmless flame.
“The boy learned early that books were not quiet objects.”
