Appearance
Beezle is a wiry gnome with weathered skin, bright alert eyes, and hands that never seem to stay still. He wears a patched leather coat cut for climbing rigging and slipping through alleys, with a sea-worn tricorn hat and a narrow sash full of hidden pockets. A short dagger rides at one hip, a coiled bit of sailor's rope at the other, and his grin is the sharp, knowing kind of smile that suggests he has already noticed three exits and one lie.
Mannerisms
Beezle speaks softly when he is thinking and gets louder only when he is angry or excited. He taps two fingers against his wrist before a risky move, like he is checking the pulse of fate, and he never sits with his back to a door or a railing.
Personality
Beezle is quick-witted, cautious, and unexpectedly compassionate. He enjoys a good riddle, keeps his promises with stubborn seriousness, and has the habit of helping people in ways that make it look like they solved their own problems. He acts like a rascal because it makes enemies underestimate him, but he is at his best when protecting the innocent and exposing a bully.
Ideals
Justice. The law matters, but fairness matters more. I will not stand by while the strong exploit the weak, even if I have to use dishonest tools to stop them.
Bonds
My twin brother is my compass, even when I pretend otherwise. If justice can be done quietly, with a knife in the dark and a promise kept, I will do it.
Flaws
I still trust in a clever scheme a little too much, and I sometimes reach for the old criminal answer before the honest one. If a plan can be improved by bending a rule, I may be tempted to bend it.
Quirks
Background
Beezle spent his younger years in the crowded ports and crooked dockside markets of the coast, where a quick hand and a faster tongue could keep a gnome fed. He ran smuggling errands, lifted purses, and learned every trick a petty criminal could use to survive the night. For a long time he believed the world was divided into sharks and victims, and he did what he had to in order to stay among the sharks. Then the sea changed him. A crew took him aboard, and with them came storm-tossed voyages, island bargains, and the steady example of his twin brother, whose own hard past had led him toward justice instead of cruelty. Watching his brother stand up for strangers, and surviving enough disasters to recognize the cost of selfishness, Beezle finally chose a better path. He still knows how to crack a lock, slip a pocket, and disappear in a crowd, but now he uses those talents to expose monsters, outwit slavers, and make sure the powerful do not prey on the weak. He calls it redemption, though his crew mostly calls it good sense.
