Appearance
Rus is a broad-shouldered human man in his late forties, with medium black hair broken by several grey streaks in his clean, carefully trimmed beard. He usually wears a dark work shirt beneath a weathered brown leather jacket, with sawdust caught in the seams and a carpenter's pencil tucked behind one ear. He stands with most of his weight settled onto one leg, relaxed but ready, as though he is still waiting for a legion command. Before speaking, he draws a slow breath through his nose and clears his throat once. His hands are large, callused, and remarkably steady, equally suited to a plane, a sword, or a tavern mug.
Mannerisms
Before speaking, Rus inhales slowly and clears his throat once. When waiting, he balances his weight on one leg and lightly taps his thumb against the fingers of his sword hand. He inspects chairs, doorframes, and tables without thinking, often tightening a loose joint while continuing a conversation.
Personality
Rus is patient, observant, and quietly warm. He prefers useful conversation to grand speeches, but when he does speak, people tend to listen because every word sounds considered. He is protective without being smothering, practical without being cold, and fond of dry humor delivered with a completely straight face. He enjoys good food, sound timber, well-made tools, and the rare evening when his wife lets him sit in the tavern without asking him to repair something.
Ideals
Protection. Strength is a responsibility, not a privilege. If Rus can stand between danger and someone vulnerable, then standing aside would be a moral failure.
Bonds
His wife Mara and her tavern are the center of his life. He is also determined to preserve his family's carpentry barn and ensure that no apprentice under his care is abandoned or exploited.
Flaws
Rus can be stubbornly certain that patience and hard work will solve any problem. He tends to hide exhaustion, grief, and fear behind practical chores, and he sometimes judges people who have never had to finish a difficult job with their own hands.
Quirks
Background
Rus Artanus was born among the smell of fresh shavings, boiled glue, and rain on roof tiles. His family had worked wood for generations, building doors, wagons, tables, and the occasional coffin. Rus had a natural gift for the trade, especially for judging the strength of a joint by touch, but as a young man he wanted to see more of the world than the inside of his family's carpentry barn. He joined the legion, where his broad frame and disciplined patience made him a reliable shield bearer and later a veteran infantryman. He learned to hold a line, read a room before trouble began, and protect people who could not protect themselves. After his service, Rus returned home and reopened the family workshop. He now spends most days in the carpentry barn, repairing furniture, building sturdy tools, and quietly listening to the concerns of neighbors who come for work or advice. His wife, Mara, owns and runs the busiest tavern in town, and Rus regularly moves between the barn and the tavern, carrying finished chairs one way and gossip the other. He dislikes being called a hero, but when danger threatens his guild, his wife's tavern, or anyone under his protection, the old legion discipline returns immediately. He takes up his shield, gives one measured breath, and places himself between danger and the people who matter.
