Appearance
A lean human man of average height, with warm brown skin, close-cropped black hair, and a narrow face softened by a broad, thoughtful jaw. His hands are his most noticeable feature. Years spent copying holy texts, grinding pigments, and tending incense have left his fingertips permanently stained in saffron, indigo, and lamp-black, while the skin around his nails is thick and split. His teeth are unusually square and prominent, giving his rare smiles a startling, almost boyish directness. He dresses in practical dark robes beneath a weathered traveling coat, with a red thread wound around one wrist and a brass holy symbol tucked beneath his collar.
Mannerisms
He rubs the stained pads of his fingers together while thinking, as if checking whether the ink is still there. When someone makes a promise, he tilts his head and repeats the important words under his breath. He laughs with his whole jaw, showing his square teeth, but immediately tries to hide the sound when the subject is solemn.
Personality
Teborun is patient, observant, and intensely curious. He treats every conversation like a text that can be studied for hidden meaning, but he is not cold. He remembers names, food preferences, family troubles, and small acts of kindness with remarkable precision. Around the frightened or oppressed, his reserve becomes quiet tenderness. Around bullies, his voice turns calm enough to be unsettling.
Ideals
Mercy is not weakness. Power becomes righteous only when it is used to protect people who cannot defend themselves.
Bonds
He carries the original torn page that began his pact and will risk almost anything to return it to the shrine archive. He is devoted to the memory of the shrine keeper who taught him that faith without mercy is only obedience.
Flaws
He cannot leave an unanswered theological question alone, even when silence would be safer. He also assumes that anyone offering easy certainty is hiding a price, which makes him suspicious of allies and vulnerable to anyone patient enough to sound reasonable.
Quirks
Background
Teborun grew up in a human shrine built beside an old trade road, a place where travelers left offerings before crossing the dry hills. He learned his first letters from funerary tablets and his first prayers from the shrine's elderly keeper, who valued careful questions more than easy faith. Teborun became the acolyte who repaired cracked icons, recorded names of the dead, and remembered which villages had gone hungry during the last bad season. His intelligence made him useful, but his habit of asking what answered prayers cost made some priests uneasy. His pact began with a forbidden homily found behind a loose stone in the shrine's archive. The text addressed a presence beneath the world as if it were an old patron, promising knowledge in exchange for one simple duty, never allow a cruel power to claim an unanswered soul. The bargain awakened a voice in the incense smoke, a patient fiend who offered Teborun the means to confront tyrants, monsters, and false saints. Teborun accepted, believing that a dangerous tool could still serve a merciful purpose. He now travels from shrine to shrine, copying local prayers, exposing abuses of power, and quietly wondering whether his patron chose him because of his compassion or because it expects him to become something far worse.
“His intelligence made him useful, but his habit of asking what answered prayers cost made some priests uneasy.”
