Appearance

Admiral Meebo is a small, rust-red kobold with a cream-colored muzzle, bright amber eyes, and oversized ears nicked by years of shipboard hazards. His scales are patched with soot-dark stains and salt crust, and a thin scar runs across one cheek from a snapped length of rigging. He wears a weathered leather coat beneath an absurdly grand, many-times-mended captain's hat. A collection of polished sea glass, brass buttons, and bits of colorful rope hang from his belt.

Mannerisms

Meebo salutes with two fingers whenever someone says the word captain. He constantly checks knots, pockets, and rigging lines, even in places where none are present. When nervous, he whispers nautical commands to himself and rocks slightly from heel to toe as though standing on a moving deck.

Personality

Meebo is watchful, eager, and intensely observant. He treats every conversation like a lesson in seamanship, constantly studying how people move, lie, bargain, and reveal what they want. He is proud of his title of admiral, even though it was self-appointed after he successfully directed a complicated harbor maneuver. Meebo is cheerful around sailors, wary around officials, and deeply offended when anyone treats him as a mere mascot.

Ideals

Freedom. The sea belongs to anyone clever enough to survive it, and no creature should be trapped beneath someone else's rules.

Bonds

The Salty Slurs and Captain Tonway are Meebo's first true family. He will risk almost anything to protect the ship, its crew, and the battered captain's hat that Tonway gave him.

Flaws

Meebo is intensely suspicious of anyone who criticizes Captain Tonway or questions his place aboard the Salty Slurs. He also cannot resist pocketing interesting scraps, shiny objects, or unattended keys, even when doing so creates obvious complications.

Quirks

Collects sea glass and polished bits of metal, arranging them by color.
Names every important rope, knot, and piece of shipboard equipment.
Refuses to sleep without checking the nearest exit and identifying three possible hiding places.
Calls any large seabird an officer and gives it a respectful salute.
Keeps a tiny logbook filled with sketches of ships, locks, knots, and suspicious strangers.

Background

Meebo grew up in a trash heap outside a major coastal city, where he learned to survive by scavenging flotsam from beaches, tide pools, and alleys near the docks. One day, he saw a huge wooden ship glide past the shore, its sails bellied by the wind and its hull shining with spray. Awestruck, Meebo followed it to the harbor, slipped aboard unseen, and hid among the cargo. He survived by stealing scraps, studying knots, and creeping onto the deck during the night watch to observe the sailors without being noticed. The ship belonged to Captain Tonway and the crew of the Salty Slurs. Meebo's secret life aboard ended during a violent storm, when the ship began to founder and damaged rigging threatened to pull the mast down. While the crew struggled on deck, Meebo scuttled up the mainmast with astonishing speed, crawled onto the swaying yardarm, and cut away the fouled lines before they could capsize the ship. The startled sailors hauled him back aboard expecting a stowaway, but Captain Tonway saw the courage behind the theft. He gave Meebo an old captain's hat from his seabag and welcomed him into the crew. Two years later, Meebo is considered half sailor, half mascot, though he takes his duties very seriously. His nimble hands, talent for slipping unnoticed through cramped spaces, and intimate knowledge of ships have made him an excellent rogue and an invaluable scout whenever the Salty Slurs comes to port.
