Appearance
Rembrandt is a broad-shelled male tortle with deep olive-green skin, amber eyes, and a shell patterned in layered umber, ochre, and muted blue-gray bands. He keeps the small scales around his face meticulously clean and polishes the rim of his shell until it gleams. He wears practical chain mail over a padded vest, carries a greatsword across his back, and has a collection of ink-stained cords, notes, and brass charms tied around one foreleg. His voice is normally warm and sonorous, but when startled or angry he draws each breath through his nose in a conspicuously measured hiss.
Mannerisms
Rembrandt taps the edge of his shell twice before answering a difficult question, as though consulting an internal index. He speaks in carefully shaped sentences and often gives directions by comparing places to shelves, chapters, or footnotes. When combat begins, his breathing becomes slow and audible, and he quietly recites the title of the book he intends to write about the experience.
Personality
Rembrandt is patient with frightened people, impatient with lazy thinking, and delighted by any mystery that has survived long enough to become complicated. He approaches danger with the same focus he brings to a manuscript, first identifying the structure, then locating the weak point. Beneath his scholarly confidence is a genuine tenderness for ordinary people whose stories were never written down.
Ideals
Knowledge belongs to everyone. Secrets may be guarded from tyrants, but never hoarded merely to make the wise feel important.
Bonds
I will recover the stolen manuscript and return every surviving page to the archive that lost it.
Flaws
He cannot resist correcting an inaccurate quotation, even when doing so is tactically disastrous. He also assumes that anyone who burns a book is either evil or catastrophically careless, and he is not always patient enough to determine which.
Quirks
Background
Rembrandt was raised in a wandering tortle community that treated every journey as both migration and lesson. While other young tortles learned the currents, tides, and safe places to sleep, Rembrandt became fascinated by the marks left behind by older civilizations. He copied inscriptions onto scraps of bark, memorized fragments of sailors' songs, and traded labor at monasteries and manor libraries for access to books. His chosen name came from a damaged portrait he found in an archive, a name he liked because it sounded sturdy enough to survive being mispronounced. His scholarly life changed when a fire destroyed part of the archive where he had worked. Rembrandt helped carry surviving books from the smoke, but a sealed manuscript disappeared during the confusion. Convinced that the theft was connected to a wider effort to erase dangerous historical truths, he took up the sword to protect knowledge in the field rather than merely study it behind walls. He now travels as an armed researcher, collecting clues, defending fellow seekers, and treating every dungeon as an uncatalogued library with unusually aggressive shelving.
