Appearance
Brann is a compact warforged built for reconnaissance and field command, with dark iron plates over a frame of weathered ashwood. His face is a simple, stern mask inset with two pale green lens-stones. Within a minute of meeting him, most people notice the way he dresses. His military coat is carefully patched at the elbows with mismatched canvas, but its brass collar clasp is polished to a bright, almost obsessive shine. He moves with measured quiet, placing each foot as though crossing a minefield, then becomes completely motionless when listening. A narrow band of blue paint circles his left wrist, the only surviving mark from his first unit.
Mannerisms
Brann pauses for one silent count before answering questions, as though consulting an internal field manual. He turns his head toward distant sounds without moving the rest of his body, and he checks every doorway twice, once on entering and once before leaving.
Personality
Brann is deliberate, observant, and dryly courteous. He speaks in short reports until he trusts someone, then reveals a surprisingly patient sense of humor. He notices practical kindnesses, remembers the preferred marching pace of every companion, and is more comfortable beside a campfire than at a formal table.
Ideals
Protection. Strength has value only when it is placed between the vulnerable and the thing that would harm them.
Bonds
He carries the blue wrist-band of his first unit and will risk himself to recover any soldier or civilian abandoned in the field.
Flaws
Brann treats uncertainty as a tactical defect and can become controlling when companions improvise. He has difficulty recognizing when an order is cruel, especially if it is phrased as necessary discipline. He also keeps promises long after the people who made them have forgotten.
Quirks
Background
Brann was assembled in a military foundry beneath a rain-blackened fortress, one of a dozen bodies intended for scouting, message running, and survival behind enemy lines. His first commander called him Bran, because the longer designation stamped into his chest plate was inconvenient in the field. The name stayed. During the final months of the war, Brann served as a pathfinder for a battered infantry company, guiding living soldiers through flooded roads, collapsed villages, and forests seeded with old traps. He learned that a soldier's most important duty was not killing. It was noticing who had been left behind. When the war ended, Brann found himself unable to accept the quiet. He carried out escort work, border patrols, and search missions, gradually becoming the person people hired when a trail vanished in difficult country. His ranger training came from an old scout captain who taught him to read birdsong, broken grass, and the absence of expected sounds. Brann now travels beyond the roads, hunting threats before they reach settlements. He claims he is still following orders. In truth, he is trying to discover whether a weapon can choose what it protects.
