Appearance
Noma is a compact lightfoot halfling with warm brown skin, thick dark curls usually pinned beneath a faded blue scarf, and bright hazel eyes that seem to be measuring every doorway and pocket in the room. She favors her left foot when standing still, rocking gently from heel to toe as though listening for music only she can hear. Within a minute of meeting her, most people notice the faint scent of orange peel, lamp oil, and lavender soap that clings to her clothes. Her traveling coat is carefully patched but elegantly cut, with hidden inner pockets and mismatched brass buttons.
Mannerisms
Noma rocks subtly from heel to toe when thinking, taps rhythms against her thumb, and gives every new acquaintance a different affectionate nickname until she learns which one makes them smile. When caught in a lie, she becomes more polite rather than less.
Personality
Noma is warm, quick-witted, and almost relentlessly attentive. She remembers small preferences, notices who has not eaten, and turns tense silences into games or songs. Her friendliness is genuine, but it is also practiced, which makes even sincere moments feel faintly theatrical. She prefers clever solutions to violent ones, though she is perfectly willing to make a dramatic escape when a plan goes wrong.
Ideals
Mercy. A clever person should use deception to protect the vulnerable, not prey upon them. Truth matters most when it gives someone the power to choose freely.
Bonds
She keeps a water-stained ledger containing the names of everyone harmed by the troupe that raised her. She intends to repay every debt, even those no one remembers.
Flaws
She cannot resist improving a lie once it has worked, often adding unnecessary details until suspicion catches up with her. She also assumes that anyone offering unconditional kindness must be planning something.
Quirks
Background
Noma Bellweather grew up in a riverside halfling settlement where every family had a trade and every child learned early that a good story could be as useful as a strong back. Her first performances were harmless, little dramas staged outside the ferry office, but she discovered that audiences paid more for wonder than truth. By adolescence, she was traveling with a troupe of musicians, fortune tellers, and confidence artists who taught her sleight of hand, forged papers, and the delicate art of lying without making honest people feel foolish. The troupe eventually turned cruel. Their final scheme involved a charitable fund meant for families displaced by a flood, and Noma realized that the people being deceived were not wealthy marks but neighbors she knew by name. She stole the money, exposed the troupe, and used the last of her stagecraft to vanish before their hired guards found her. Since then, she has wandered from town to town under several identities, performing songs, uncovering frauds, and quietly redirecting stolen wealth toward the people who need it. Her magic emerged through performance, shaped by the belief that a story can open a locked heart just as easily as a locked door.
