Appearance

Roland Boreal is a broad-shouldered silver-blue dragonborn with a thick, combat-hardened build, a blunt jawline, and faint scar tissue across his brow and ribs. His scales catch the light like winter ice, especially along the horns and forearms, and his expression sits somewhere between a challenge and a grin. He wears practical soldier's gear with the ease of a man who has slept in armor, drank under it, and fought in it too. Even at rest he looks ready to step between danger and someone weaker.

Mannerisms

Roland rolls his shoulders before a fight like he is settling into armor that belongs to him alone. He often taps two knuckles against his chest before stepping in front of someone, a silent habit from years of taking the first blow. When he is drinking, he laughs loudly and slaps the table after every finished story, as if daring the world to argue with him.

Personality

Roland is boisterous, direct, and impossible to embarrass for long. He respects people who keep their word, laughs at his own bruises, and treats a fair challenge as a kind of conversation. Underneath the noise, he is deeply protective and surprisingly tender with anyone he thinks the world has already beaten down.

Ideals

Protection. Strength is meant to keep others alive, not to lord over them. A person proves their worth by standing up for the people nobody else will defend.

Bonds

He refuses to stand by when someone smaller, younger, or weaker is being targeted, because he knows exactly what it feels like to be the one left exposed. The memory of Arwin and Regis, and the fact that he survived when they did not, still weighs on him like a promise he has not yet finished keeping. He is fiercely loyal to Killian and the rest of the 6FU, and he treats their shared victories as proof that he is worth more than Feiron ever claimed.

Flaws

Roland confuses recklessness with bravery more often than he admits, and he will sometimes accept a challenge simply because he cannot stand the idea of backing down. He measures his worth against old humiliations, especially Feiron's words, and can become stubbornly self-destructive when he thinks he is failing. He also has a bad habit of escalating danger when someone he cares about is threatened, because he would rather be hurt than watch another person pay the price.

Quirks

He counts down his breaths before a fight, like he is bracing for a fall.
He keeps trophies from major battles and bad decisions in the same pouch.
He cannot pass a tavern wager without considering it a personal insult.
He quietly places himself between children and danger without thinking.

Background

Roland Boreal grew up in rough company, always between his brothers Arwin and Regis and the neighborhood game of Cave-in's, where the object was to ride out a deliberate collapse and scramble to the top first. He was always the chunky one, the slow one, the one who lost. Then a group of older bullies forced Roland and his brothers into a Cave-in they could not refuse. The boulders came down hard, Arwin and Regis were lost, and Roland was the only child who crawled out alive. The story made him famous in the worst way, and after that, every older kid in boot camp seemed eager to prove that survival was a fluke. Roland accepted every challenge. He lost nearly all of them. But each loss hardened him, and slowly, stubbornly, he began to win. By the time recruitment age came, Roland had learned that courage was not the absence of fear, it was staying in the fight long enough to become something more than the joke people expected. In general boot camp he met Killian, another target for bullying, and Roland stepped in without hesitation. Anyone who wanted to pick on Killian would have to go through him first. The threat only painted a bigger target on Killian's back, but Roland never regretted it. He was then pushed into specialty training and rose to Sergeant First Class, where he excelled in sparring against his peers. His Sergeant Feiron, however, singled him out and beat him mercilessly again and again. Roland won once, and only once. When he graduated, Feiron told him he would always be a lesser version of himself, a discount knock-off. Roland carried that insult like a sworn truth, and it drove him into drink, brawling, and reckless challenge-taking until he found that he could win at the one thing that mattered least, and lose at the one thing that mattered most. Rock bottom came with bruised knuckles, empty cups, and the attention of Quillor Lunt's tavern, where Roland's fights brought in more money than they cost. Then Killian found him, along with Berkeley, Preston, and Wyatt, and the 6FU brought him back into purpose. With them, Roland was not a discount of anything. He was a shield, a shock trooper, and a friend who would throw himself into danger before anyone else could be hurt.
