Appearance

Mammoth Greatusk is a broad-shouldered orc with deep green-gray skin, heavy tusks, and alert amber eyes. He wears a patched scholar's robe over a badly fitted travel coat, with the sleeves carefully shortened and reinforced so they will not catch on his staff. His old wooden quarterstaff is polished far more often than the rest of his equipment, its iron-capped tip wrapped in faded red cord. When standing still, he leans forward slightly onto the staff as though listening for a voice only he can hear. A bundle of dried herbs hangs from his belt beside a leather-bound spellbook covered in handwritten notes and crude drawings of magical symbols.

Mannerisms

Mammoth rests both hands on his staff whenever he is thinking. He sounds out unfamiliar arcane words under his breath before casting them, and he carefully cleans dust from his spellbook before eating or sleeping. When surprised, he instinctively looks toward the nearest doorway as if expecting his father to appear there.

Personality

Mammoth is earnest, observant, and unexpectedly gentle for someone of his size. He listens intensely when others speak, especially if they describe family, magic, or fear. He approaches every problem like a puzzle, but his compassion often leads him to help before he has finished thinking through the consequences. He is proud of his orc heritage while refusing to accept that violence is the only way an orc can be strong.

Ideals

Knowledge should be used to protect the vulnerable, not to dominate them. Every person deserves the chance to become more than what others expect of them.

Bonds

He will risk almost anything to learn what happened to his father and recover the staff, spellbook, or teachings his father left behind. He also feels responsible for protecting young people who remind him of himself before the raid.

Flaws

He is so determined to find meaning in his father's final spell that he sometimes ignores obvious evidence that contradicts his theories. Mammoth also distrusts anyone who treats magic as a privilege reserved for the educated or powerful, and his anger can make him reckless.

Quirks

He names particularly useful herbs after people he has met.
He taps his staff three times before opening his spellbook.
He collects unusual stones because he believes his father may have used one as a spell component.
He becomes visibly pleased whenever someone asks him about magic.
He keeps one page of his spellbook deliberately blank for a spell he hopes his father will someday teach him.

Background

Mammoth Greatusk was still young when raiders came to his orc village. He remembers the shouting, the smoke, and the sudden silence that followed his father's retreat from the gate. At first Mammoth thought his father had abandoned them. Then he saw him turn, staff raised in both hands, and cast a burst of strange blue-white fire that drove the raiders back long enough for families to escape. It was the last time Mammoth ever saw him. The image of an orc running into battle with a staff instead of an axe became the foundation of Mammoth's life. He began collecting every scrap of magical knowledge he could find, trading labor for lessons and copying symbols from ruined shrines, travelers' spellbooks, and the margins of old medical texts. His search eventually led him into a period of isolation in a remote wilderness hut, where he studied arcane theory, cultivated medicinal plants, and meditated on whether his father had survived. During that solitude, Mammoth made a discovery about a distinctive magical signature connected to the spell his father cast. Now he travels as a wizard, determined to understand that magic, protect people who cannot protect themselves, and prove that an orc can carry a staff into danger for reasons other than war.
