Appearance
Maron is a broad-shouldered human man with warm brown skin, a close-cropped beard, and dark, thoughtful eyes marked by sleeplessness. His black hair is beginning to silver at the temples. He wears a weathered chain shirt beneath a cream-colored priest's vestment, with a blue-and-gold stole bearing the sunburst of Elturel. His holy symbol hangs from a cord around his neck, its surface scratched from captivity and later polished by hand.
Mannerisms
Maron speaks softly and pauses before answering difficult questions, as though checking each word against scripture. He cleans his holy symbol whenever he is anxious, folds parchment into precise thirds, and instinctively positions himself between strangers and doors.
Personality
Gentle, observant, and quietly resilient. Maron listens more carefully than he speaks, remembers the names of servants and guards, and treats fear as something to be tended rather than mocked. His kindness is practical, shown through bandages, accurate directions, warm food, and making sure the last person through a doorway is not left alone.
Ideals
Mercy is an action, not a feeling. The frightened, the ignorant, and the abandoned deserve protection before they deserve judgment.
Bonds
The chapel of Elturel is still his home, and he will risk almost anything to restore it as a sanctuary. He also keeps a torn page from Gideon Lightward's prayer book, determined to learn what corruption shaped the man and whether others were taken in the same way.
Flaws
Maron assumes every benevolent institution may conceal a locked room. He can become secretive and controlling when frightened, especially if he believes someone is withholding information. He also struggles to forgive himself for surviving when other captives did not.
Quirks
Background
Maron Qadira served as the priest of a small chapel in Elturel, where his sermons were quiet, practical things about mercy, endurance, and the duty to shelter the frightened. Before taking his vows, he studied old accounts of the city, celestial signs, and the history of religious movements that rose during times of catastrophe. His modest library became a refuge for pilgrims, refugees, and anyone who needed a safe place to ask difficult questions. He was never a brilliant scholar, but he had patience, a good memory for human stories, and a stubborn conviction that knowledge was meant to protect people rather than impress them. Gideon Lightward took him from the chapel during a night of false sanctuary. Maron remembers the smell of lamp oil, a locked iron door, and Gideon's voice reciting prayers that had been hollowed out and made cruel. His captivity left him with scars around one wrist and an instinctive distrust of closed rooms, but it did not break his faith. When he escaped, or was released for reasons he still does not understand, he returned to the chapel and found that its bells had been silenced. Now he travels with the group as its priest, carrying Elturel's symbol not as proof that the city is safe, but as a promise that no one under his care will be abandoned as he was.
