Johnny is a small, sturdy human boy with close-cropped dark hair and a solemn face that brightens quickly when someone asks about the elements. His monk's robe is plainly made and hangs a little too long; its cuffs have been carefully folded and restitched in mismatched thread. He keeps one smooth river pebble tucked in a sash, and stands with his weight settled evenly, as if listening for the ground to answer.

Earnest, observant, and eager to make friends, Johnny treats every new meeting as the start of a possible adventure. He is gentle with nervous people and animals, but has a child's stubborn certainty that he can master whatever he has just seen.

Johnny grew up among the prayer halls and kitchen gardens of a modest roadside shrine called Breath and Stone, a name left over from its uneasy joining of two rival sanctuaries.
