Appearance
A small, broad-shouldered rock gnome with warm copper-brown skin, moss-green eyes, and thick curls of chestnut hair gathered behind his ears with brass clips. His neatly trimmed beard is threaded with colored wire and tiny polished beads. He wears practical leather armor beneath a soot-marked green work coat, with a magnifying lens strapped to one eye and a collection of miniature tools hanging from his belt. His hands are permanently stained with oil, ink, and powdered charcoal.
Mannerisms
Celyn speaks quickly when excited and slows down dramatically when explaining a technical idea. He taps a finger against his lens while thinking, smells unfamiliar metals before touching them, and occasionally mutters measurements under his breath. When nervous, he straightens nearby objects into precise parallel lines.
Personality
Celyn is gentle, curious, and intensely attentive to small details. He treats tools as trusted companions and people as puzzles whose needs deserve careful study. He enjoys repairing objects because their damage is honest and visible, while people often conceal what hurts them. Though polite and soft-spoken, he becomes surprisingly stubborn when someone dismisses practical work as humble or unimportant.
Ideals
Useful beauty. The finest invention is not the most elaborate one, but the one that makes someone's difficult day a little easier.
Bonds
The Brassroot Fellowship gave Celyn his first real chance, and he will risk much to protect its members and reputation. He also carries a half-completed protective device built by his missing mentor, Master Odrin Pumel, and refuses to abandon the hope that Odrin is still alive.
Flaws
Celyn cannot leave a broken mechanism alone, even when repairing it is dangerous, impolite, or catastrophically ill-timed. He is also quietly convinced that asking for help makes him look less competent, so he often hides mistakes until they become much larger problems.
Quirks
Background
Celyn Pelydr was born in a hillside gnome settlement where every household had a workshop, a garden, or both. He grew up among copper kettles, clockwork toys, and the comforting rhythm of hammers on anvils. His first invention was a tiny self-stirring soup spoon that spun too quickly, launched broth across the kitchen, and earned him a week of polishing silverware. Rather than discouraging him, the accident convinced Celyn that every failure was simply a device still searching for its proper purpose. He eventually apprenticed with the Brassroot Fellowship, a respected guild of instrument makers and repairers. There he learned to mend farm tools, tune musical mechanisms, and create small magical devices for people who could not afford grand enchantments. Celyn became especially valued for repairing delicate equipment others considered impossible to save. When a guild expedition vanished while testing a series of protective devices in the wild, Celyn left his comfortable workshop to find them. He carries their unfinished designs with him, determined to discover what went wrong and prove that useful magic should protect ordinary people, not merely impress wealthy patrons.
