Appearance
Sahraq is a broad-shouldered tiefling with deep russet skin, swept-back charcoal horns, and a long, carefully braided tail tipped with a brass ring. His black hair is cropped close at the sides and tied into a short topknot. His eyes glow a muted amber, and his hands are unusually distinctive, with thickened fingertips, ink-stained nails, and calluses from years of handling bowstrings, whetstones, dice, and ritual chalk. He wears a well-maintained soldier's uniform beneath a dark leather coat, with a faded unit insignia sewn inside the collar rather than displayed openly. Within a minute of meeting someone, he is likely to notice and adjust the brass ring on his tail or check the knot of his left glove.
Mannerisms
Sahraq speaks in concise, military phrases, then becomes unexpectedly poetic when describing dreams or the night sky. He checks the brass ring on his tail whenever he lies, touches the inside of his collar before making a difficult decision, and silently counts exits whenever he enters a room.
Personality
Sahraq is disciplined, observant, and dryly compassionate. He rarely offers comfort in words, preferring to mend equipment, stand watch, or place himself between danger and someone weaker. He distrusts grand speeches but respects anyone who keeps a promise when no one is watching. Beneath his controlled exterior is a restless curiosity about the strange intelligence that answers his prayers.
Ideals
Protection. Power is only honorable when it is placed between the vulnerable and the people who would exploit them.
Bonds
The surviving families of his old regiment are his responsibility, whether they want his help or not. He carries a fragment of the broken unit standard and intends to learn the truth about the ambush that destroyed his company.
Flaws
He assumes every chain of command is hiding a betrayal, and he can become controlling when frightened. He is also terrified that his patron's voice is gradually becoming indistinguishable from his own thoughts.
Quirks
Background
Sahraq served as a field standard-bearer and scout in a border regiment that spent its years guarding trade roads, mountain passes, and villages too poor to appear on official maps. His infernal blood made him an object of suspicion among new recruits, but his ability to keep marching through heat, hunger, and fear eventually made him indispensable. He learned to read terrain, morale, and silence with equal care. The brass ring on his tail was once part of his unit's broken standard, salvaged after an ambush that left his commander and most of his company dead. In the aftermath, Sahraq heard a voice beneath the battlefield, not in words but in a pressure behind his thoughts, offering the strength to survive and the knowledge to find those responsible. He accepted without understanding the price. The presence that answered is vast, patient, and alien, a mind he calls the Listener Beneath the Brass. Sahraq now travels as a warlock and former soldier, hunting the officer who abandoned his regiment while trying to determine whether his patron wants justice, obedience, or simply a door opened into the waking world. He protects ordinary people with the stubborn discipline of a man who has seen how quickly institutions forget them.
“He learned to read terrain, morale, and silence with equal care.”
