Appearance
Kilia is a tall, athletic tiefling woman with deep crimson skin, swept-back black horns, and long dark hair braided with bits of bone, copper, and faded blue thread. Her amber eyes are watchful and difficult to read. She wears battered chain mail beneath a travel-stained tabard, carries a round shield marked with a simple silver sun, and keeps a carved animal tooth tied around one wrist. Her movements are economical, alert, and practiced from years of wilderness travel.
Mannerisms
Kilia studies the horizon whenever someone speaks about danger. She cleans her sword after every serious conversation, pauses before entering any doorway, and answers personal questions with observations about the weather or terrain.
Personality
Kilia is observant, restrained, and fiercely self-reliant. She speaks plainly, dislikes needless ceremony, and treats strangers according to what they do rather than what they claim to be. Although she rarely offers comfort in gentle words, she is dependable in a crisis and quietly generous to people who have been overlooked or mistreated.
Ideals
Balance. No authority is sacred, and no freedom is absolute. The strong should be checked, the helpless should be defended, and the wilderness should never be wholly conquered.
Bonds
The silver shield she carries belonged to the dying knight who first showed her that strength could be used without domination. She will risk herself to protect honest travelers, isolated villages, and anyone abandoned by the powerful.
Flaws
Kilia distrusts institutions so deeply that she often assumes laws, churches, and governments are disguises for exploitation. She can be cold toward people who expect immediate compassion, and once she decides that someone is dangerous, changing her mind is extremely difficult.
Quirks
Background
Kilia was born beneath a red winter moon in a remote borderland settlement where tieflings were tolerated only so long as they remained useful. Her family lived by guiding hunters, pilgrims, and smugglers through a vast stretch of untamed country. From an early age, she learned to read weather, animal tracks, and the silence that falls before danger. The wilderness did not care what blood ran through her veins, and that impartiality became the closest thing she had to a religion. During a brutal winter, Kilia found a wounded knight dying beside an abandoned shrine. The knight had failed to protect a caravan, yet had spent his final strength saving strangers. Kilia carried him to shelter and listened as he spoke of courage without glory, duty without reward, and mercy without sentiment. After his death, she took up his shield and swore to protect travelers who had no one else to rely on. Her oath is not devoted to a god or a rigid moral code. Instead, she serves balance, repaying aid, opposing cruelty when it threatens the vulnerable, and allowing the world to remain wild where civilization has become oppressive. She now wanders from settlement to settlement, offering protection for food, information, or a promise of future assistance.
