Khatik is a broad-shouldered mountain dwarf with a square, weathered face, a carefully braided black beard threaded with two dull copper rings, and dark eyes that rarely stop scanning a room. His beard is clipped short along the jaw for military practicality, though one braid near his left shoulder has grown noticeably thin from years of rubbing between his fingers. He wears battered chain mail beneath a red-brown military coat, and keeps an old iron whistle fastened to his collar. Within a minute of meeting him, most people notice that he checks the whistle whenever he is thinking or uneasy.

Khatik is disciplined, observant, and unexpectedly patient with frightened people. He prefers practical kindness over comforting words, repairing a broken strap or standing watch rather than offering a speech. He has a dry sense of humor that appears only when everyone else is too tired to notice it.

Khatik was raised in the lower barracks of a mountain fortress where every dwarf learned the sound of an alarm bell before learning the names of distant kings. His family forged tools and fittings for the garrison, but Khatik had little patience for the forge. He preferred the drill yard, where footwork, shield discipline, and timing made sense in a way that family arguments never did. By adulthood he had joined the fortress infantry and earned a reputation for holding narrow passages longer than anyone thought possible. His company was eventually sent beyond the mountain roads to protect caravans and resupply posts during a border war. Khatik survived several ugly retreats, including one in which his commander died after ordering the unit to abandon a trapped wagon train. Khatik followed the order, but has never forgiven himself for it. He left active service with his rank intact and his old iron whistle as his only keepsake. Now he works as a guard, escort, and occasional adventurer, determined to learn whether courage means obeying the order that saves the most soldiers or refusing to leave anyone behind.
