Appearance
Magnus is a lean human man with warm brown skin, dark auburn hair worn neatly back, and alert gray-brown eyes that seem to measure every room as if it were a puzzle. His hands are especially noticeable, ink-stained at the fingertips and hardened along the palms from years of handling ledgers, crates, parchment, and magical instruments. He dresses in a well-maintained but travel-worn scholar's coat, reinforced boots, and a deep blue scarf embroidered with a faded merchant-family crest. A plain iron clasp shaped like a broken staff is all he has left of his family's most important heirloom.
Mannerisms
Magnus taps the butt of his quarterstaff twice before entering an unfamiliar room, then quietly counts doors, windows, and exits. When thinking, he rubs ink from one fingertip against his thumb and speaks in precise, carefully measured sentences.
Personality
Magnus is courteous, observant, and quietly intense. He treats every conversation as a source of evidence, but he is not heartless. He has a genuine tenderness toward ordinary workers, apprentices, and displaced families, especially those overlooked by wealthy institutions. He prefers preparation to bravado and will spend an hour checking a lock, map, or contract before trusting it.
Ideals
Knowledge should serve people, not merely enrich those who possess it. If learning cannot protect the vulnerable or expose wrongdoing, it has become another form of greed.
Bonds
I will recover the stolen staff of magi and uncover who ordered my family's murder. I also protect the surviving workers, clients, and travelers who depended on my family's house.
Flaws
Magnus is slow to trust anyone with wealth, secrets, or magic, and he can become coldly suspicious when people show sudden interest in him. He is also willing to endanger himself for information, especially when he believes it may reveal the fate of his family.
Quirks
Background
Magnus Spellforge was born into a prosperous human merchant family whose caravans carried rare metals, enchanted curiosities, and scholarly goods between distant cities. His family valued both commerce and learning, and Magnus grew up surrounded by account books, foreign maps, old manuscripts, and guarded conversations about magic. His greatest inheritance was not wealth, but access to a staff of magi that had belonged to an ancestor who once served as a court arcanist. Before Magnus could learn its secrets, his family was murdered in a carefully planned attack, and the staff was stolen along with the killers' identities.
