Appearance
Bonk is a broad-shouldered tiefling with brick-red skin, curling black horns, a thin tail, and bright amber eyes. He wears a patched scholar's coat over practical travel clothes, with a silver-tipped cane tucked under one arm despite rarely needing it. His horns are wrapped near the tips with colorful ribbons collected from different towns, and he carries an expression of cheerful concentration, as if every conversation is a puzzle he intends to solve. Within a minute of meeting him, most people notice that he constantly checks the position of his tail and subtly adjusts his coat pockets whenever someone comes near.
Mannerisms
Bonk speaks with his hands, keeps one hand near his coat pockets when strangers approach, and checks the position of his tail whenever he turns around. When lying, he becomes unusually precise about harmless details, such as the exact number of buttons on his coat or the color of a tavern sign.
Personality
Bonk is warm, talkative, and relentlessly encouraging. He treats conversation like a performance, but his concern for ordinary people is genuine. He enjoys giving everyone a flattering nickname, remembers small personal details with surprising accuracy, and becomes intensely focused when someone is being exploited by a stronger or wealthier person.
Ideals
Redemption. A person's past should not determine the good they are capable of doing next.
Bonds
He protects the members of his old traveling troupe, especially the younger performers who still believe every lie he told them was part of a grand adventure.
Flaws
Bonk cannot resist improving a lie once it has already worked. He also assumes that every favor has a hidden price, including sincere kindness, and may waste precious time searching for the trick instead of accepting help.
Quirks
Background
Bonk grew up traveling with a small troupe of confidence artists who taught him that a convincing smile could open more doors than a strong arm. His tiefling heritage made him an easy target for suspicion, so he learned to turn other people's assumptions into opportunities. He became a master of harmless scams, forged credentials, and elaborate disguises, usually taking money from wealthy marks who could afford the loss. Even then, he always left enough behind for hungry servants, desperate families, or anyone else who looked as though they needed it more than he did. His life changed when one of his deceptions attracted the attention of a hidden infernal power. Rather than expose him, the entity offered him a bargain: real magic in exchange for a future favor, to be named later. Bonk accepted, believing that a promise without a date was merely another kind of con. The bargain gave him eldritch power, but it also made him realize that some debts can follow a person across every disguise. Now he adventures to do genuine good, uncover the nature of his patron's eventual demand, and prove that a charlatan can use a false name without becoming a false person.
