Appearance
A slim human nobleman with pale skin, careful posture, and a face that can become charmingly bright in an instant. He dresses in a sharply tailored black doublet embroidered with skulls and lilies in black silk thread, often paired with a small capelet set just so. In warm weather he removes the sleeves to reveal a flowing white linen shirt with blackwork cuffs and collar in a skull and cypress vine motif. His rapier has a skull-cast pommel and a guard shaped like a rib cage, and he wears mourning colors with the elegance of a courtier who knows exactly how to make the dead look fashionable.
Mannerisms
He speaks with polished courtesy, even when he is teasing, and often lowers his voice when discussing grief or burial customs. He touches the skull pommel of his rapier when thinking, like a courtier smoothing a cuff. In stressful moments he becomes oddly cheerful and practical, as if a pleasant tone can keep death from taking offense. He habitually arranges his sleeves, collar, and capelet before entering any room, even a battlefield.
Personality
Polite, bright-eyed, and disarmingly cheerful, Edwin carries himself like a court gentleman at a funeral. He enjoys clever conversation, tasteful vice, and the small luxuries of good cloth, better wine, and excellent company, but he is never cruel for sport. He is sincere in his faith, though his piety is expressed through wit, compassion, and a belief that the dead deserve elegance as much as the living deserve hope. He can speak with alarming warmth about mortuary rites, then turn around and wink as if he has just made a joke about the weather.
Ideals
Dignity. Death is inevitable, so the only true question is whether we meet it with courage, gratitude, and honesty. No one deserves to be dragged screaming into the final silence if mercy, comfort, or a clean blade can preserve their dignity. He believes life should be savored because it is finite, not because it is meaningless.
Bonds
He owes his life to the Lady and never forgets that every sunrise is a mercy. He remains deeply loyal to the temple clergy who taught him to bring peace to the dying without fear. He keeps a small memorial prayer for the healer who first saved him, and he is determined that no one under his care should face death alone or unloved. He also feels a quiet responsibility to make his family proud, especially his elder brother, even if their paths were always meant to diverge.
Flaws
He can be flippant about danger, especially when he is trying to reassure others, and sometimes treats his own near-death history like a charming anecdote when it should be taken more seriously. The illness refused to let go, and the first healer to answer was a solemn death cleric of the Lady, calm as winter earth. Edwin survived by inches, and his family, grateful and shaken, vowed to the goddess who had stood at his bedside. The temple in turn asked that, should the boy live to adulthood, he be dedicated to its service. Every birthday since then has felt like a gift wrapped in borrowed time.
