Appearance

Maisini is a lean, long-limbed tabaxi with smoke-gray fur banded by charcoal stripes, pale green eyes, and a narrow, expressive muzzle. Her lower canine teeth are slightly prominent, showing whenever she smiles or bites into food, which gives her laughter a mischievous, almost foxlike edge. She smells faintly of lamp oil, orange peel, and circus dust, a scent she insists is perfume. Her clothing combines a travel-stained monk's wrap with flexible performer silks, hidden pockets, and a sash embroidered with tiny silver bells that she has carefully muffled.

Mannerisms

Maisini tests every chair, railing, and windowsill for balance before trusting it. When thinking, she slowly flexes the claws of one hand in sequence. She calls people by affectionate nicknames until they reveal what they dislike being called, then remembers it forever.

Personality

Maisini is bright, observant, and theatrically confident. She enjoys making an entrance, but she is more interested in watching everyone else's reaction than in being admired herself. She plans carefully, then pretends every success was an accident. Around children and nervous performers, her guarded humor softens into patient encouragement. Around authority figures, it becomes an elaborate game of needling questions and innocent smiles.

Ideals

Freedom. No lock, law, employer, or tradition should decide where a person is allowed to go. If a rule exists only to protect the powerful, breaking it is a form of honesty.

Bonds

Zephyrai gave Maisini a life beyond theft, and Maisini will protect the circus, its performers, and its secrets even when doing so costs her freedom.

Flaws

Maisini cannot resist proving that she can get through a barrier, outwit a guard, or steal something that was supposedly impossible to steal. She also treats sincere affection with suspicion, assuming every kindness is the beginning of a bargain.

Quirks

Keeps a private list of doors she has opened without keys.
Leaves a single orange peel beside every successful escape route.
Counts ceiling beams whenever she enters a new building.
Names difficult knots after people she dislikes.
Applauds silently by tapping two claws together.

Background

Maisini learned early that a locked door was only a suggestion. She made her living by planning three exits before entering a room, then using nimble paws, careful timing, and improbable leaps to reach the one place no guard thought to watch. She was never a particularly violent thief. Her specialty was taking objects from people who had too much, especially smug merchants, dishonest magistrates, and collectors who displayed stolen relics as trophies. She justified the work as redistribution, though she kept enough of the proceeds to maintain a comfortable nest of cushions, dried fish, and brass trinkets beneath an abandoned theater staircase. Her life changed when Zephyrai saw her cross a crowded market by running along awnings, balancing on a fruit cart, and vaulting over a startled mule without dropping the purse she had taken. Rather than call for the watch, Zephyrai offered her a place in the circus. Maisini accepted after discovering that the circus required more than acrobatics. Its performers taught her breath control, disciplined movement, and the strange stillness that comes from listening to a crowd without being ruled by it. She now performs aerial escapes, shadow dances, and feats of balance while quietly investigating which patrons, rivals, or officials might be planning trouble for the troupe. She tells everyone she joined for the applause. In truth, Zephyrai gave her the first honest livelihood that ever trusted her instincts instead of fearing them.
