Appearance
Balderk is a stocky dwarf whose iron-gray beard is clipped short and stained with smoke. His face is a roadmap of deep wrinkles and old scars, with eyes that look perpetually heavy and ready for sleep. He wears battered chain mail that he has polished so many times the rings are thin, and he carries a massive, notched shield that he often leans on like a walking stick.
Mannerisms
He constantly rubs the bridge of his nose when others are talking and lets out a heavy, weary sigh before drawing his weapon.
Personality
He speaks in short, clipped sentences and rarely wastes breath on pleasantries. Balderk is the living embodiment of exhaustion, viewing every quest not as a grand adventure, but as a tedious job that someone has to do properly so he can eventually go home. He is remarkably competent, but his brilliance is always shadowed by a deep, rumbling sigh.
Ideals
Practicality. Ideals don't keep the front line from breaking. Proper positioning and a steady shield do.
Bonds
My unit was my family, and I am the last of them. I carry their names etched into the back of my shield.
Flaws
I am incredibly cynical and have a hard time believing that any conflict can truly be resolved without more blood being spilled.
Quirks
Background
Balderk spent eighty years in the subterranean wars of the northern peaks, holding choke points against tides of orcs and giants. He rose to the rank of sergeant because he was the only one in his unit who consistently survived, a fact that haunts him more than it fills him with pride. When his term of service ended, he tried to settle into the quiet life of a village smith, but the local militia kept begging for his advice and the restless ghosts of his fallen comrades wouldn't let him sleep in a stationary bed. Now, he wanders the surface world, trading his tactical genius and heavy shield for coin and a place to rest his head. He does not seek glory, he only seeks a mission final enough that he can put his axe down for good. He treats his younger adventuring companions like headstrong recruits, constantly grumbling about their lack of discipline while shielding them from the brunt of the danger.
