Appearance
Shahir Etxarri is a broad-shouldered human man with weather-browned skin, green eyes, and dark brown hair worn to the jaw in a rough, practical cut. His hands are heavily callused from sword drills, marching, and camp labor. He stands with an unconscious, open-legged steadiness that makes him seem larger than he is, and he often occupies more space than he realizes. His chain mail is carefully maintained but plainly issued, while a pale blue cord around his wrist is the only visible reminder of the person or power that saved his life. He has no inherited surname. Etxarri is the house name he chose for himself, a declaration that his lineage begins with him.
Mannerisms
Shahir checks exits whenever he enters a room, stands whenever anyone speaks about a fallen soldier, and touches the blue cord on his wrist before making a promise. When angry, he becomes very polite and addresses people by their full names.
Personality
Shahir is direct, watchful, and unexpectedly gentle with frightened people. He has the easy discipline of a former soldier but dislikes needless ceremony. He wants to be honorable, though he is still learning how to separate honor from the commands he once obeyed. Around strangers he appears stern and self-contained, but he is secretly hungry for companionship and approval.
Ideals
No one is expendable. A ruler, officer, or noble who sacrifices the powerless for convenience has forfeited the right to command respect.
Bonds
The blue cord and the unseen savior who left it with him are sacred to Shahir. He will protect abandoned soldiers, refugees, and anyone sacrificed by people safely distant from the battlefield. He intends to make the name Etxarri respected enough that no child without a family name will ever be treated as worthless in his presence.
Flaws
Shahir is quick to defy authority, especially when someone uses rank to excuse cruelty. He mistakes stubbornness for moral courage, keeps secrets long after trust would be safer, and has an uncomfortable tendency to measure every new commander against the ones who betrayed his unit.
Quirks
Background
Shahir was raised without a family name, passed between garrison kitchens, caravan camps, and the barracks of a border lord who valued strong backs more than bloodlines. He became a soldier because the army offered food, structure, and a place where a nameless young man could still earn the right to stand in formation. At twenty-three, his unit was abandoned during a retreat and destroyed in a dry ravine by enemies who knew the terrain better than their commanders. Shahir survived beneath the bodies of his comrades, unable to move and slowly losing consciousness beneath the night cold. Something found him before dawn. Whether it was a wandering saint, a forgotten spirit of the road, or simply a stranger carrying an old blue lantern, Shahir has never learned the truth. He remembers a voice telling him that justice was not the same as obedience, then waking alive beside a spring that had not appeared on any map. He swore an oath of vengeance against the officers and war profiteers responsible for the massacre, but his oath is still young and unshaped. He now travels as a paladin, seeking the people who turned his unit into expendable bait. His greater hope is to become a knight of the realm someday, not through inheritance, but by founding a house whose first name is his own, House Etxarri.
