Appearance
Eric Picard is a lean human man with pale skin, sharp features, and long white hair usually tied behind his neck. His left eye has been deliberately removed and concealed beneath an iron mask engraved with a stylized eye motif. He wears layered blue robes over fitted travel clothes, a rapier at his hip, and an arcane iron gauntlet on his right hand. A black and silver magpie commonly perches on his shoulder or circles above him, watching strangers with unsettling intelligence.
Mannerisms
Eric pauses before answering simple questions, as though deciding which version of the truth will be most useful. He touches the rim of his iron mask when someone lies, tilts his head toward his missing eye when judging a person, and speaks to Argent in a low voice as if the magpie were his most trusted adviser.
Personality
Eric is insightful, observant, and unfailingly polite, even when threatening someone. He studies every conversation for leverage, remembers personal details that others forget, and offers kindness only when he expects it to become useful later. He fears abandonment and humiliation more than death, so he surrounds himself with masks, aliases, contingencies, and carefully controlled relationships.
Ideals
Control. The world is ruled by whoever controls information, perception, and fear. Eric will become that ruler, because only absolute power can guarantee absolute safety.
Bonds
His magpie companion, Argent, carries messages, stolen trinkets, and fragments of evidence between his aliases. Eric also keeps a sealed letter from the mentor who betrayed him, intending to confront that person only when he has enough power to make the meeting unavoidable.
Flaws
Eric cannot tolerate uncertainty or emotional dependence. When frightened, he becomes more controlling, more dishonest, and more willing to sacrifice innocent people if doing so restores his sense of security. He secretly believes that compassion is merely weakness wearing a pleasant face.
Quirks
Background
Eric Picard was born to an unremarkable human family and discovered early that people were easier to control when they believed they understood him. He began with harmless deceptions, forged letters, staged omens, and carefully chosen lies, but his talent for manipulation eventually attracted the attention of a traveling arcanist. Under that mentor, Eric learned the disciplined study of wizardry, especially the arts of illusion, enchantment, and divination. He became fascinated by the eye as both a physical organ and a symbol of perception, judgment, and vulnerability. To Eric, whoever controls what others see controls what they believe to be real. His ambition became more dangerous after a betrayal by a former patron exposed one of his identities and nearly cost him his life. Convinced that empathy had made him weak, Eric removed his own left eye in a ritual intended to sever his fear of being seen clearly. He replaced the missing sense with an arcane focus housed within an iron gauntlet, though the result is imperfect and sometimes shows him visions he cannot interpret. Now he travels under the name Eric Picard, though it is only one of many identities, seeking forbidden lore and influential allies. He intends to build a position of absolute security and power, believing that if he controls enough people, secrets, and magical knowledge, no one will ever be able to hurt him again.
“Under that mentor, Eric learned the disciplined study of wizardry, especially the arts of illusion, enchantment, and divination.”
