Appearance
Korran is a broad-shouldered half-orc with ash-gray skin, a square jaw, and a pair of short, chipped tusks. His black hair is kept close to the scalp in the practical style of a career soldier, and an old scar runs from his left temple to the corner of his mouth. He wears battered chain mail beneath a weather-stained surcoat, bearing no current nation's colors. His shield is scorched around the edges, and a small bronze phoenix is riveted to its center. His eyes are dark, watchful, and tired, but they burn with stubborn purpose when someone is in danger.
Mannerisms
Korran counts exits whenever he enters a room and positions himself where he can see the most people. He checks the straps of his shield before difficult conversations, speaks in clipped military phrases, and pauses before giving an order, as though remembering the cost of being wrong.
Personality
Korran is disciplined, observant, and quietly compassionate. He treats every campfire like a military briefing, making sure the vulnerable eat first and that someone remains on watch. He rarely raises his voice, because he learned that calm decisions save more lives than dramatic speeches. Beneath his severity is a patient kindness, especially toward frightened recruits, refugees, and people who have been blamed for failures beyond their control.
Ideals
Responsibility. Laws, nations, and commanders can be wrong. When lives are on the line, a person is responsible for the choice they make, not merely for the orders they followed.
Bonds
Korran carries the scorched insignia of the soldiers and civilians who died during the failed campaign. He will risk everything to protect the villages of the frontier, especially those abandoned by the authorities who once promised them safety.
Flaws
Korran is slow to trust commanders, institutions, and anyone who speaks confidently about acceptable losses. He can become rigid and confrontational when he believes civilians are being treated as expendable, even when restraint or compromise would better serve the innocent. Deep down, he fears that the disaster was partly his fault, and he sometimes accepts impossible burdens rather than risk failing someone again.
Quirks
Background
Korran was born in the borderlands of Faerun, the son of an orc mother who taught him endurance and a human father who taught him letters, discipline, and the habit of keeping his word. He entered the army young, expecting that a clear chain of command could keep people safe. Through years of hard service, he became a respected lieutenant and later commanded soldiers during a campaign against raiders threatening a cluster of frontier villages. Korran followed the orders given to him, trusting that the officers above him understood the larger battle. They did not. A forced retreat came too late, reinforcements never arrived, and frightened civilians were trapped between the armies. Hundreds died, including many of Korran's own soldiers. When the reports were written, his commanders blamed the disaster on his supposed cowardice and disobedience. His rank, home, and reputation vanished in a single season. Korran found the ruins of a roadside shrine in the aftermath, where survivors had gathered around a dying brazier. He expected judgment from the gods, but instead he saw a single ember survive beneath the ash. He swore an oath there, not to a nation or commander, but to the choice made when lives hang in the balance. The phoenix became his symbol, not because he believes himself pure, but because he believes failure must become a warning rather than an excuse. He now travels through Faerun as a disgraced soldier and newly sworn paladin, placing himself between the helpless and the next preventable catastrophe. He obeys lawful orders when they protect people, and breaks them without hesitation when obedience would turn him into another accomplice to slaughter.
