Appearance
A towering goliath with ash-gray skin veined by pale stone-like markings, close-cropped black hair, and bright amber eyes. He wears polished chain mail over a white-and-blue tabard, a weathered holy symbol at his chest, and carries a broad shield etched with simple temple sigils. His frame is massive even by goliath standards, but his expression is warm and alert, like a guardian who is always watching for the next injustice.
Mannerisms
He bows his head before speaking a blessing, even in the middle of an argument. When angry, he becomes unnervingly gentle, as if trying not to frighten a wounded animal. He unconsciously taps prayer rhythms on the rim of his shield when he is thinking.
Personality
Warm, blunt, and fiercely protective, Kael treats people like they matter immediately, before they have earned anything from him. He laughs easily, keeps his promises with stubborn precision, and believes that faith is proven by what you do when nobody is rewarding you for it.
Ideals
Mercy should be active, not polite. The strong exist to protect those who cannot protect themselves, and if law becomes a weapon against the innocent, it deserves to be broken and rebuilt.
Bonds
He still serves the memory of the mountain temple that taught him mercy, and he sends what coin he can to keep its lamp lit through winter. He has sworn to protect pilgrims, refugees, and anyone who has been told they must suffer quietly for the sake of order.
Flaws
Kael has little patience for rules that exist only to protect the comfortable, and he can turn defiant in a heartbeat when authority feels lazy or cruel. He also tends to shoulder every burden himself, which makes him slow to ask for help and easy to bait into reckless heroics.
Quirks
Background
Kael Stoneward was raised in a high mountain sanctuary where monks, priests, and pilgrims all shared one narrow stair, one winter hearth, and one set of prayers. As a child, he was too broad for the pews and too curious for silence, so the temple set him to carrying water, copying hymns, and escorting travelers through dangerous passes. He learned devotion not as obedience, but as responsibility, the kind that means stepping between the vulnerable and the violence that hunts them. When raiders and toll-lords began using the temple road as their private hunting ground, Kael discovered that his faith did not end at the altar. It lived in his hands, in the shield he raised, and in the anger he refused to let harden into cruelty. He took his oath after a storm collapsed the old shrine roof and trapped a band of refugees inside. Kael broke the temple gates, shattered a blockade of thieves, and dragged strangers out through freezing rain while reciting the prayers he had copied for years. The abbess called it blasphemy, but the pilgrims called it mercy. Kael called it common sense. Now he wanders as a paladin whose faith is real but untamed, a giant-blooded guardian who believes the gods smile most brightly on those who protect others without waiting for permission. He still carries incense in his pack, but he is just as likely to use it to bless the dead as to smoke out a corrupt magistrate from a locked office.
“He learned devotion not as obedience, but as responsibility, the kind that means stepping between the vulnerable and the violence that hunts them.”
