Appearance
A lean, medium-sized tiefling man with umber-red skin, swept-back black horns, a narrow tail, and steady gold eyes. His dark hair is clipped short at the sides and left longer on top, where it falls in an untidy wave. He wears battered leather armor beneath a charcoal travel coat, with a brass key ring fastened to his belt. His voice is low and dry, with a faint rasp that becomes a careful whisper when he is frightened. Within a minute of meeting him, most people notice that he touches the brass key ring whenever he enters a new room, checking each key by feel.
Mannerisms
He speaks in clipped, precise sentences and pauses before answering questions, as if checking the wording of an invisible contract. When rattled, his breath catches audibly and his normally dry voice drops into a near-whisper. He checks his brass key ring whenever he crosses a threshold.
Personality
Sivert is restrained, observant, and unfailingly polite to ordinary people. He dislikes improvisation but is excellent at finding loopholes under pressure. He has a dry sense of humor, a strong protective instinct, and an awkward habit of treating casual conversation like sworn testimony.
Ideals
Justice must be written clearly enough that the powerful cannot twist it. If the law protects cruelty, then the law must be corrected, not worshiped.
Bonds
I owe freedom to the people whose names were hidden in the magistrate's contract, and I will not let their sacrifice become a footnote.
Flaws
I assume every promise contains a trap, including promises made by people who have earned my trust. When frightened, I become so literal that I can seem cruel.

Background
Sivert Kresnik grew up in the warehouse districts of a river city where tiefling children learned early which doors opened for coin and which opened only for blood. He became a locksmith, courier, and occasional burglar, specializing in jobs that required patience rather than violence. His finest work was the theft of a sealed iron reliquary from a magistrate's evidence vault. Inside was not treasure, but a blackened contract written in Infernal, signed by a devil who had been quietly purchasing verdicts from the city's courts. Sivert tried to expose the arrangement, but the magistrate turned the evidence against him. In desperation, Sivert read the contract aloud and answered the voice that emerged from it. The voice belonged to Vhalzarek, a lesser devil who offered power in exchange for Sivert's service. Sivert accepted, then twisted the pact's first command, using its magic to destroy the contract's network and free the people trapped beneath it. He remains bound to the devil, but treats every order as a legal puzzle, searching for the narrowest interpretation that protects the innocent. He now travels as a reluctant warlock and determined investigator, gathering proof that may one day let him break the pact without condemning anyone else.
