You have significant experience studying, tracking, hunting, and even talking to a certain type of enemy. Choose aberrations as your favored enemies. You have advantage on Wisdom (Survival) checks to track them and Intelligence checks to recall information about them. You also learn Deep Speech as a language associated with your favored enemies.
- Natural ExplorerLevel 1
You are particularly familiar with one type of natural environment and are adept at traveling and surviving there. Choose swamp as your favored terrain. While traveling for an hour or more in swamp terrain, difficult terrain does not slow your group's travel, your group cannot become lost except by magical means, even when engaged in another activity while traveling, you remain alert to danger, and if traveling alone you can move stealthily at a normal pace. When you forage, you find twice as much food as you normally would. While tracking other creatures, you also learn their exact number, sizes, and how long ago they passed through the area.
- DarkvisionHalf-ElfYou can see in dim light within 60 feet as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You cannot discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Appearance
A lean, long-limbed half-elf with weathered bronze skin, storm-gray eyes, and black hair braided with tiny river stones. His left ear is subtly pointed and bears three mismatched copper rings. He wears scarred scale mail beneath a dark green cloak, with a recurved longbow and twin shortswords kept within easy reach. A faded burn scar crosses his right palm, a reminder of the marsh fire that changed his life.
Mannerisms
Caelan pauses before answering ordinary questions, as though listening for distant sounds. He checks the direction of the wind before entering any building and wipes his blades with marsh grass after every fight.
Personality
Quietly observant and unnervingly patient, Caelan notices small changes in people, weather, and animal behavior. He is compassionate toward the frightened and practical toward the dangerous. Though he dislikes crowds, he has a dry sense of humor that emerges at the least expected moments.
Ideals
Preservation. The wild remembers every wound, and civilization has no right to destroy what it does not understand.
Bonds
I must find the buried door from my vision before something beneath the marsh opens it from the inside.
Flaws
I become secretive and evasive whenever anyone asks about the black glass seed, even when honesty would be safer.

Background
Caelan Vey was raised between two worlds and never felt entirely claimed by either. His elven mother belonged to a traveling band of marsh botanists, while his human father served as a ferryman along the drowned roads of the Fenward. Caelan learned to read animal tracks before he could read letters, and he grew accustomed to being treated as a curiosity by villages that welcomed his knowledge but distrusted his blood. When a fever swept through the fen settlements, he withdrew into an abandoned watchtower and spent a year cataloging medicinal plants, poisonous fungi, and the strange behavior of animals fleeing certain pools. During that solitude, Caelan found a black glass seed beneath the roots of an ancient willow. When he touched it, every bird in the marsh fell silent, and he saw a vision of a vast underground door breathing like a sleeping lung. He has never spoken of the vision plainly, recording only fragments in a waterproof journal. Since leaving the tower, he has become a ranger who guides travelers through dangerous wetlands, hunts creatures that prey upon isolated communities, and quietly searches for signs of the buried door. His hermit habits remain, but his isolation is now a deliberate shield, protecting others from a secret he fears may already be waking.
