Appearance
Celine is a lean half-elf woman of medium height, with warm olive skin, dark brown hair usually braided with narrow copper wire, and an expressive, watchful face. She stands with one heel slightly raised and places her weight on the balls of her feet whenever she waits, as though ready to move before anyone else notices. Within a minute of meeting her, people notice that her eyes rarely settle on faces. They travel instead to doors, windows, hands, pockets, and the nearest reflective surface. She dresses in fitted charcoal leather, a rust-red sash, and a weathered traveling coat lined with hidden pockets. Her fingers are ink-stained from forgery work, and a small silver thimble hangs from a cord at her wrist.
Mannerisms
When listening, Celine angles her body toward the nearest exit without appearing to do so. She rolls a coin across her knuckles while thinking, pauses before saying anyone's true name, and smiles more broadly when she is most suspicious. She habitually checks the underside of tables and leaves rooms by a different route than the one she entered.
Personality
Celine is warm, observant, and conversational, with an instinct for making strangers feel briefly understood. She prefers practical jokes to cruel ones and treats etiquette as a lock that can be picked without damaging the door. She is patient when gathering information, but becomes unexpectedly reckless when someone vulnerable is being cornered.
Ideals
Freedom. No border, title, debt, or official seal should decide whether a person deserves safety. If the law protects cruelty, then deception becomes a form of justice.
Bonds
She protects displaced people, illegal immigrants, and debtors who remind her of the families her parents once helped. She is determined to uncover the arcanist who ordered her death and reveal the magistrate's complete network, even if doing so destroys the last respectable name attached to her family.
Flaws
Celine assumes every kindness has a hidden price and sometimes ruins genuine alliances by testing people who never agreed to be tested. She cannot resist correcting a bad forgery, even when leaving it untouched would be safer. When cornered, she lies first and thinks about the consequences afterward.
Quirks
Background
Celine was raised in a multilingual quarter of a river city where merchants, pilgrims, soldiers, and smugglers all used the same three bridges and trusted no one completely. Her elven mother copied contracts for foreign traders, while her human father repaired locks and insisted that every mechanism had a story. Celine learned early that a signature could open a gate more quietly than a blade, and that the person who knew where everyone was looking usually controlled the room. By adolescence, she was selling forged travel papers to people who needed to cross borders, though she quietly altered the papers of refugees so they would not be caught in the same net as the criminals who paid her. Her career changed when she forged a warrant for a corrupt magistrate and accidentally exposed a network that included one of the city's respected arcanists. The arcanist retaliated by placing a bounty on her name and sending enchanted hunters after her. Celine survived by stealing a spellbook, learning the simplest arcane tricks from its margins, and turning her talent for misdirection into something more dangerous. Now she travels under borrowed names, dismantling predatory schemes from within. She still carries the original warrant that ruined her old life, folded into the lining of her coat, because she intends to make its truth public when she finds the one person powerful enough to survive hearing it.
