Appearance
A compact, broad-shouldered lightfoot halfling with warm brown skin, thick black curls usually tied back with red thread, and alert hazel eyes. She dresses in well-kept but practical leather armor beneath a charcoal traveling coat. She smells faintly of beeswax, rosemary, and old incense, a scent she maintains deliberately because it reminds her of the temple where she was raised. Her grooming is precise, especially her hands, which are clean, nails trimmed, and always free of dirt despite her profession.
Mannerisms
Dema rubs a pinch of rosemary between her fingers before entering an unfamiliar room. When listening to someone lie, she becomes unusually still and quietly counts their blinks. She ends most prayers by checking the nearest exit.
Personality
Dema is observant, brisk, and irreverently practical. She is warm toward ordinary people, especially travelers and servants, but becomes guarded around officials and anyone who speaks with too much certainty. She enjoys solving problems in ways that make powerful people uncomfortable and has a dry sense of humor that appears most often during danger.
Ideals
Useful truth is better than beautiful doctrine. If a rule protects the innocent, keep it. If it protects the powerful, pick the lock.
Bonds
The little roadside shrine that raised her is still vulnerable, and Dema sends money, supplies, and warnings whenever she can. She also carries a cracked bronze reliquary containing a fragment of the stolen relic, the one piece she could not return.
Flaws
Dema assumes every institution is hiding a second motive, including temples, adventuring parties, and her own employers. She is also incapable of leaving a lock, sealed drawer, or private letter unopened if she believes someone is trying to keep it from her.
Quirks
Background
Dema Kvrtskeli was raised in a small halfling shrine built beside an old trade road. Her family expected her to become a keeper of records, but Dema preferred the practical work of carrying offerings through crowded markets, finding lost pilgrims, and noticing which visitors lied about their names. The temple priests called it divine attentiveness. Dema privately called it having good ears and quick feet. She learned the prayers, copied sacred texts, and became especially skilled at opening stubborn offering boxes without damaging the wood. Her path changed when a relic disappeared from the shrine under her watch. Dema followed the trail through three towns, recovering the relic from a smuggling ring and exposing a respected priest who had arranged the theft. The temple welcomed her back, but Dema no longer trusted institutions to guard what mattered. Now she travels as a wandering acolyte and discreet problem-solver, accepting missions from shrines, merchants, and anyone who can offer a convincing reason. She still prays every morning, though she has begun addressing the gods as colleagues rather than superiors.
“The temple priests called it divine attentiveness.”
