Appearance
Regard is a slender high elf with warm brown skin, long silver-black hair usually tied with a strip of faded blue cloth, and calm gray-green eyes. Years spent copying sacred texts have left his fingertips permanently darkened with ink. He dresses in layered cream and midnight-blue robes beneath a weatherproof traveling cloak, with a polished wooden quarterstaff and a small silver holy symbol at his throat. His voice is soft and carefully measured, preceded by a brief thoughtful breath before he speaks.
Mannerisms
Before answering a difficult question, Regard inhales quietly through his nose and looks slightly upward as if consulting an invisible page. When reading, he traces each line with one ink-stained finger. He addresses even hostile supernatural beings with formal courtesy until they give him a clear reason to stop.
Personality
Regard is patient, observant, and unfailingly courteous. He listens for the fear beneath anger and the grief beneath cruelty. His scholarly curiosity can make him seem distracted, but he notices small details others miss, especially changes in tone, ritual behavior, and written symbols. He prefers de-escalation, precise language, and practical kindness, though his calm becomes quietly relentless when innocents are threatened.
Ideals
Mercy. Knowledge and magic are sacred only when they are used to reduce suffering and protect those who cannot protect themselves.
Bonds
The temple that raised Regard is threatened by a hidden spiritual corruption, and he will risk much to protect its people and sacred archives.
Flaws
Regard is so determined to find meaning in every omen that he sometimes ignores obvious evidence that a mystery is merely a mystery. He also struggles to refuse requests for help, even when doing so endangers his companions.
Quirks
Background
Regard was raised in a woodland temple where the priests taught that every mortal life was a fragment of a much larger sacred pattern. He began as a copyist, reproducing prayers and illuminated diagrams by lamplight, but his relentless questions soon drew the attention of the temple's senior arcanist. The old scholar recognized that Regard was not merely memorizing holy texts. He was noticing the hidden structures beneath them, the mathematical rhythm of invocations, the careful grammar shared by divine prayer and arcane formula. His studies eventually led him to wizardry, though Regard never abandoned the faith that first shaped him. He views magic as a responsibility rather than a possession, a language that should be used to mend what fear and ignorance have broken. He left the temple after discovering a damaged fragment of an ancient liturgy that seemed to describe a coming spiritual catastrophe. Now he travels to recover the missing portions, protect ordinary people from supernatural dangers, and determine whether the fragment is a warning, a prophecy, or a deliberate lie planted generations ago.
“The old scholar recognized that Regard was not merely memorizing holy texts.”
